As it's been talked up quite rightly in the other thread, what's the bestest of the bestest version? The big strings on Glen Campbell's do it for me.![]()

Was Glenns version the original recording?Originally Posted by Little Jimmy Oddman

Brian Bennett's version is pretty nifty.

Can we start a separate thread for "By the Time I Get to Phoenix"?
What a strange figure, Glen Campbell... "Guess I'm Dumb", anybody!?
Just get the brown cover 'best of' on capitol, 50p special, 'By The Time I Get To Phoenix' 'Galveston' 'Witchta Lineman' 'Where's The Playground Susie' total genius...Originally Posted by Brainbomb

"Not only that but the WHOLE COVER is UNCREASED with only 2 or 3 TINY creaselines near the opening edge about half way down!!!! In the same place (about half way down the opening edge), there is an absolutely TINY and PERFECTLY repaired split" (xxxrecords)
Yeah, Glen Campbell - weird character: Beach Boys, Jimmy Webb, lame.
'Oh, What A Woman' is another crakcer of his in the country-funk stakes.
Johnny Cash has a decent version as well on one of the American albums I think, his voice suits it perfectly.
See I thought this was going to be a match made in heaven as I love both, but was sorely disappointed by it.Originally Posted by Little Jimmy Oddman
I think its more the novelty (as I thought the same thing as well) - the song sounds like it should be a Cash song I reckon.
Dean Martin from his 'Gentle On My Mind' LP. He just utterly Dean breezes it. Fantastic.Originally Posted by beddoes

I've got guess I'm dumb on a 7" with Oh What A Woman on the flip (killer track folky funk type stuff) but its a early noughties re-issue on "vibraphone"?
Guess I'm Dumb is such a killer Brian Wilson track - did he ever do a version himself?
Cheers GM
I embarrasingly first heard WL via These Animal Men (mid 90's new wave of new wave posers) and though I loved it back then I think I can safely warn everyone of its probable stinkyness.
Glens' version all the way.
Ha, ha, just remembered I played it as my GCSE performance piece![]()
I once paid money to watch These Animal Men. Actual money. What was I thinking?
If I ever end up like U2 slit my throat with a garden vegetable
I've heard rumours that the Beach Boys did a version, but I don't think I believe it...nothing cropped up on those sea of tunes boots as far as I remember.Originally Posted by Gentleman Mixer
I wonder if 'oh what a woman' is the same b as the original capitol single?...does it sound of a similar era?

Bought a S*M*A*S*H 12" on the basis of a Keith LeBlanc mix on it, was SORELY disappointed.
I've heard the Glen Campbell 45 of Wichita Lineman described as the best song ever, and never felt inclined to argue. Definitely up there.
Pete Moore's instrumental version on the 'Exciting Sounds Of Tomorrow' LP runs Glen's take a respectable second in my book.
a giant steam-powered turntable in warwickshire plays six foot cement recordings of Prince Albert's speeches to the rejoicing populace
From what I've read, the Beach Boys farmed out "Guess I'm Dumb" because none of them could sing it. Requires pretty serious range.
Think the b-side was 'That's Alright'. Oh What A Woman is pretty easy to pick up over here, off his Galveston LP.Originally Posted by Joe M'geek

The first time I heard WL was when I bought my first Meters LP (whichever one has it on) around 1991.
A few weeks ago I was browsing through a mates guitar book and it had the song in. I can't stop playing those first 4 chords of the verse. Perfect!
Always wondered what Guess I'm Dumb sounds like (wish there had been a Beach Boys version in the vaults).
"Don't get involved in the f**kin' chat pages. It's just full of arseholes talkin' sh*te non-stop"
dee felice trio do the only version of wichita line man that I like, not heard alot of those mentioned though

I've certainly never heard of Brian doing a version of it![]()
