    Default Weekend Finds

Made two boots today, with minimal results, just a small clutch of sevens...think the combination of heat/football hangovers kept a few people away.

Danny and the Juniors- at the hop...uk HMV was considering buying this properly cos I really wanted it...so was happy to get it for a quid. This is a classic 'books high cos they're smoking crack at record collector'

Princess Ballou- making love to you pts 1+2...awesome picture sleeved (she looks like she's pole dancing) female vocal funky jazz type thing on the PB (geddit?) label, 1981, but sounds earlier...I bet people on here know this, judging by the sounds, but I didn't. Chuffed...anyone heard of this? I suspect she may have been a stripper who flogged this record after displaying her wares or something...

Isley Brothers- this ole heart of mine UK Motown green/white demo...looks in shit condition, but plays ex...doncha love sixties emi pressings. Might bay this.

    Tremeloes- instant whip. Upgrade copy

+ some others than on returning home, appear to be shit.

*edit* actually, I'm talking shit. Also got 'freak with me' by Universal Robot Band, which is pretty good, just outside my usual bag

Lean pickings this week, expected so much more after last weeks blessing, but the lord giveth & he taketh away.
Denis King "Girl Power" nice original composition in the title track.
The New Sound Crusaders Steel Band.
Bee Gees "Odessa" in a new velvet cover, possibly intended to clean the records.
The New Flames "Best Of The New Flames", this looked so promising as it advertises Burning Soul & Soul Fire, but after a first spin I'm not entirely convinced...maybe a grower.

Two nice EP's from the boot today:

1: Heather Jones (Featuring Meic Stevens) 5 track EP (mini LP) ND 2. on the NEWYDDION DA label 1971. Pleased to have found this one, decent folk with a drop of acid... sadly without the pic cover.

2: Meic Stevens - 5 track EP (mini LP) ND 1. On the NEWYDDION DA label This EP is tough one to find, the track "Roed Gennif I Garriad" is outstanding with a solid accoustic + electric riff that builds to a psych workout in the closing passages. Again no pic cover.

    Apologies for the pic quality
Beware the lollipop of mediocrity; lick it once and you'll suck forever.

Lean in the midlands too; far too hot. Did get these amongst others

Gong - Camembert electrique and Flying Teapot
    Vangelis - Spiral
    Alien - OST
    Close Encounters - OST
Clearlight - Les Contes du Singe Fou (which translates as Childrens Stories of the Mad Monkey or something like that). Unsuprisingly this came from the same box as the Gong stuff.
Chicago Blues - Various obscure Chicago stuff on the Spivey label

    And this weeks Jazz...

2 measly Acker Bilk Albums. One of which I already have. So if anyone out there wants a copy of The Seven Ages of Acker then drop me a line.

    ....not all at once, now!

what label is this on? There is or was a website dedicated to The Flame(s), but I don't recall any 'new flames' type action. Does it say what the lineup is? I'm guessing this is after Blondie and Ricky joined the Beach Boys

Found a couple of great bits in the back room of one of my charities yesterday:

Billy Preston - The Most Exciting Organ Ever - Dare I say it, but quite Mohawks like in places!!

Tony Joe White - Continued - Listening to this now, brilliant!!

BBC TV Themes 2 - John Dankworth's Teldord's Theme is a growkling funky flute number!

Capt Sky - Concerned Party No 1

James last - Voodoo Party - Spare of one of the best LP's by Herr last

Paul McCartney - ST - I love this LP, pretty funky to these ears - Spare

Made a mistake using "new", its just The Flames & you are correct on them joining the Beach Boys, given it a couple of spins & there are a couple of nice tracks on it.

Turned up a right pair of beauties in Oxfam:

Michael Garrick Sextet, 'The Heart is a Lotus' (Argo, 1970)
London Jazz Four, 'An Elizabethan Songbook' (CBS, 1969)

And I also got Duke Ellington meets Coleman Hawkins on Impulse. A session from 1962.

    Cool

Some decent bits this weekend - the best stuff are all spares though - but I reckon I can get some good bits in trade

That Senegal LP is really good in a trad Afro style - musically it's a very interesting country with a natural afro pop sound and there is some great playing and singing happening here.
Moroccan trance music is an old interest and I'm still fascinated by the rhythms and sounds produced by sufi brotherhoods.
The Koto LP is a Datsun promo. I took it because it's related to another Datsun promo (see below).
Some Eastern European pop action - I have no idea what it is - plus a couple of Henri Salvador and EZ cheese bits.
The Pierre Sellin is a great find : French jazz - a bit trad in most places (but in a good, French way) but two tracks stand out : an excellent play out rendition of The Sidwinder (sic) and a tight composition by J.C. Pierric that's played in a Euro library jazz fashion. Great comp fodder...

    Onwards to the spares :

The André Brasseur is one of his hardest to find - also one of his best. Contains some insane organ action on Ali and Perriferic. First time I spot this in the wild. No - second time... but the other was trashed beyond recognition and with the wrong record inside...
Roland Thyssen has his moments, too. Not as consistently strong as the Bun Hunga LP but it definitely holds potential. And that's putting it mildly.
Hazy Osterwald is Swiss and plays a number of groovy cuts from Peter Laine's Music For Lovers (one of my most obscure yet greatest discoveries ever) - New Mexico, Oulaba Oulabo sound close to the originals but are different recordings. There's a funny vocal tune called RIO which is part of my Brasil set - it's totally nuts but the harmonies are very inspired and the song simply WORKS.
There's that other Datsun promo LP. Jap moog sitar EZ in overdrive - love that LP and have shared it on my blog before.
A Daniel Janin on Les Treteaux containing some ace cuts (Pick Yourself Up is a perfect groover to start a mix), Jess & James (Belgian pop), one of the cooler Morricone OSTs and two nice French jazz bits...

On top of that I scored a small lot of OSTs online - stand out albums are John Barry's The Knack (which I've wanted for a while) and Lady In Cement - with shipping etc it comes down to 4,50 Euro per LP.

    Not a bad weekend.

No car booting for me either today (couldn't be bothered with the long drive in the heat).

Yesterdays market I came away empty handed but got a couple of bits at the car boot. Nothing really worth listing but I'm bored so hey-ho:

    1) The Three New Pennies - Newly Minted. One of those dreadful private pressed things when your local club band decide to record an LP. This trio consists of a female singer, female organist (who appears to be a dwarf/small person, whatever the PC term is these days) and a male drummer. They do Booker T's Time is Tight. It is dreadful of course!

    2) Around The World With Sooty (MFP/Merry Go Round). Another one of these kiddies LP's (like the Scooby, Rupert, etc) that has a redeeming song but it certainly ain't Multiplication Rock.

    3) Classic Rhythm & Blues (Atlantic comp). Although this material is prior to the type of music I prefer it's still nice to hear original versions of Shake, Rattle & Roll, I've Got A Woman etc before they were bastardised by the white man.

    4) Vickie Sue Robinson - Half & Half (RCA). Disco/MOR/FM radio material that I'll probably struggle to sit through. Always pick up US records because it's just something different then the usual Abba, Perry Como records we all see so many of. Shame they're never copies of psych or funk LP's mind

    5) 2 flexi singles. NME Rolling Stones - Exile On Main St and of more interest to VV folks, Ready Brek Free Record featuring Johnny Harris's Footprints On The Moon (still in it's sealed polythene bag, where it's staying )

    Decent Saturday.

Monnette Sudler Quartet/Quintette -Time For a Change (Inner City 1977)

Interesting record. Sudler, a guitarist, was 24 when she recorded this. She lists her main influences as Wes Montgomery, Jimi Hendrix and Bola Sete, an odd grouping. Vocals on a couple tracks too.

Albert King -I'll Play the Blues For You (Stax)

    One of King's best sets.

Rick Nelson -Another Side of Rick Nelson (Decca)

Rick's psych record. It's crap, mostly.

Eddie Cano & Nino Temp on Broadway (Atco)

    Sealed mono. Good record.

    Luiz Henrique -Barra Limpa (Verve)

    Nice bossa lp.

Masonic Travelers -Rock My Soul (Hub City)

Excellent mid-seventies small label gospel out of Tennessee.

The Curtis Counce Quintet -Exploring the Future (Dooto)

Rare lp with one of the most coveted covers in jazz. Nice find. One for the 'bay.

Joe Tex -Buying a Book (Atlantic)

"It Ain't Sanitary" still brings a smile to my face.

Jimmy Bowen and the Rhythm Orchids (Roulette)

Their first record, and a nice copy to boot. On the tamer side for rockabilly -imagine a stripped-down, more country Ricky Nelson- but I love it.

The Joe Harriott Double Quintet -Indo-Jazz Suite (Atlantic 1966)

Not had a listen. Planning on liking it.

Sabu and His Jungle Percussionists -Jungle Percussion (Clarity)

Just what you'd expect, mostly. But one track unaccountably includes both guitar and flute and is really quite nice. Wait for it on a Beddoes summer mix.

Also Henry Mancini's Symphonic Soul lp and the Langston Hughes' Great Moments in Negro History lp on Folkways.

    some nice car booty:

the Invaders Steelband is a bit mad - good stab at 'Watermelon Man' plus a couple of other goodies. Roger McQuinn's 1st solo LP also has some nice moments. Monkees PiscesAquariusCapricorn&JonesLtd is top. David Amram's OST The Arrangement has a couple of good tracks on it. Terry Snyder/Allstars' 'Persuasive Percussion' is well nice & has some yummy totty on the sleeve. The Kaye Family is insania headthrob recorded live @ Liberal Club, Cardiff 02/06/74 - real odd shit going psychedelic farfisa when it really really shouldn't, includes a cover of 'Aquarius'. THAT Shirley Bassey album again. S&G's OST The Graduate. The 45s are Judge Dread's BigOneEP, Purp's 'Black Night' & Oliver's 'Good Morning Starshine'.

All for a splendid total of £7

A fair few keepers in today's and yesterday's batches...

Lou Rawls - Feelin' Good (Capitol) [Axelrod produced, 1968, sounds good to me...]

Booker T & The MGs - Up Tight OST (Stax) [no comment necessary]

Buddy Miles - Them Changes (Mercury) [superb LP, funky from start to finish, but his take on Neil Young's Down By The River is real chin-on-floor quality...]

Cowboy Junkies - Trinity Session (Cooking Vinyl) [think I dismissed this as a bit coffee table back in the day, but it's gone down a treat this afternoon...]

The Coral - Magic & Medicine (Deltasonic) [orange vinyl double, but should be worth a hearing I guess, given that I did like the debut, but never heard the others...]

Percy Faith Strings - The Beatles Album (CBS/Sony) [Japanese issue of Percy's rather saccharine, but in places rather pleasant turns throughthe songbook. I may use Lucy in The Sky With Diamonds to deliver narration over, in Shatner style one of these days]

3 45s as well: Latin Breed's I Turn You On/Hard To Handle (Funk 45), Ollie & The Nightingales' Got A Sure Thing/Girl You Have My Heart Singing (Stax) and The Furys I'm Satisfied With You/Just A Little Mixed Up (Keymen Records).

    And a couple of box-sets:

David Munrow/Early Music Consort London - Instruments Of The Middle Ages & Renaissance (EMI) [2xLP & book in box, doing exactly what the title says and offering a track each using a different lead instrument, whether that be a Crumhorn, bagpipe or dulcimer...very nice indeed]

David Munrow/Early Music Consort London - Art of the Netherlands (EMI) [3xLP box with booklet, vocal and instrumental music from Josquin, Ockeghem and the like. David Munrow boxes have been like buses these past couple of weeks - none for years, then 3 turning up at once...]

Some of the rest is still to be properly assessed, but most will be up for grabs if anyone's interested:

Bonnie Koloc - Hold Onto Me (Ovation) [lovely US femme-folk, beautiful LP, and a spare]

Millie & Her Boyfriends (Trojan) [set of duets between the My Boy Lollipop girl and various luminaries...near mint, too, which is almost unheard of for a Trojan LP]

Buddy Rich Big Band - Take It Away! (Liberty) [some nice noir-ish jazz in places]

Free Design - Redesigned (Light In The Attic) [remixes by Madlib, Mellow, Peanut Butter Wolf, Sharpshooters & Chris Geddes of Belle & Sebastian. Not bad at all, but I discover I prefer my Free Design un-tampered with]

King's Singers - Captain Noah & His Floating Zoo (Argo) [another Munrow situation - never seen it before, copy last week, and now here's another...]

George Benson - Space (CTI) [still looking for a George Benson LP I can really get into...this comes close in places, but no cigar I'm afraid]

Elephant's Memory - S/T (Apple) [biggest disappointment of the day, this: more like a 70s Lennon LP than anything much more distinctive, unsurprising, I guess, as John & Yoko produce it...does nothing for me, though]

The Crusaders - Unsung Heroes (Blue Thumb) [really nice, except there's a particular sax sound on these 70s jazz & fusion records that just makes me think of phone-holding while trying to get a gas bill overcharge resolved. You know the sax sound I mean, surely? Still, might give this another go]

Sounds Galactic/John Keating - An Astromusical Odyssey (Decca Phase 4) [another spare of this moogy orchestral VV classic]

Fleetwood Mac - Bare trees (Reprise) [1972 opus, falling somewhere between the earliers blues/rock incarnation, and the later FM radio, singer songwriter, MOR version...a curate's egg in which the good parts don't grab me quite enough to counter the bad]

Babybird - Ugly Beautiful (Echo) [why was Jones' music never quite as interesting as his ideas implied it should have been? Still, a few pleasant memories still circulating in the vicinity of this stuff, I guess...]

Also - a pair of Zenith binoculars, a DVD of 'Dead Man's shoes' to belatedly watch, a small 50s book on Witches' Spells, a lovely oil painting of a shoreline in a kind of Whistler meets Louise Cattrall style, a set of 4 Hornsea Pottery eggcups, and another box of slides - featuring a new baby, a 1962 living room, some mid-60s xmas mornings, and a 1968 holiday in Ibiza - to add to my archive.

Yesterday, nothing at the flea market, but did manage to find a couple LPs at a yard sale, the best being the Yardbirds 'Greatest Hits' on Epic (I've been in the mood for some Yardbirds tunes as of late).

    45 finds today:

Osiris - Gritt On It (boogie from '80)
Four Tops - Are You Man Enough? (quality 70s soul tune from 'Shaft In Africa' that I'd hope to find in my travels)
Jackie Wilson - Helpless (saw this mentioned on funk45 forum, and, after a quick spin, I can see it's gonna be a favorite)
Larry Banks - We Got A Problem (another one that's just been given a quick spin, 70s soul)
Groove Holmes - Boo-D-Doo (great mod jazz that I always buy when I see it, highly recommended)
Otis Clay - Good Lovin' (70s soul tune, sounded good)
Bold Soul Sister (spare of this classic, one for the 'bay)
and a couple other gospel and soul 45s.....

I had a pretty good day, though reduced to a £12 budget. Ouch. Just about managed to lift the following from the crates before they melted 'neath the high noon sun. . .

Meters - Cissy Strut - rare UK island comp. . .

Herbie Hancock - Manchild - decent fonkee fusion jazz innit.

War - Platinum Jazz - acceptable 2LP set from '77

Ohio Players - Honey - so-so but it has a few redeeming moments. . .

Grover Washington - some lovely hard beats and "loop me gently" samples, smothered in the Grover's soporific sax!

    Sugarhill Gang - Apache 12"

Tyrone Brunson - The Smurf 12" - electro classic. Allegedly.

John Barry - Midnight Cowboy OST

    Baker-Gurvitz Army S/T - shit mid 70's Vertigo prog.

Decent. Decent. Though I was £1 too short to afford 7" by Warp 9 - "Nunk" - and CCS - "Save the World".

Oh well. As they intone at the outset of each Inspector Gadget episode. .. NEXT TIME. . .etc etc.

Personally I think this is their best LP. Give it a few listens and I think you'll really like it.

Far better than their last LP. Very poor in comparison I thought

I went to 3 booters - ALL of which inexplicably failed to actually be open.

Then went to 12 charity shops to kill the time and got 1 CD by Royal Trux and a terrible Dutch blues/country rock LP.

    Kill me now.

I didn't find much at all but in the small pile I did gather was a strange double LP on Liberty called 'Mike's Internationale Non Stop Party' - it has tracks from the Liberty catelouge circa 1970 (ish) and I think it may be Dutch but this bloke, Mike, introduces some of the tracks and talks baws over some bits others.
It has some decent stuff on it e.g. Amon Duul II - but my question is - does anyone know who J.J. Light is? The track on this comp by this fella is very nice - kind of funky mod organ thing with shouting - who is he?
