    Default Proposal: VV Kids Comp.

    Okey doke.

I've edited this initial post with all the finer points:

I'm looking to do a comp of groovy kids music as i'm about to have one of my own and I know plenty on this board have families of their own too. Tracks should be from records specifically aimed at kids or played/sung/created by kids. The music should be interesting to us too - whether it be funky, funny or whatever.

As I live in Australia and somewhat geographically challenged because of that I thought it'd make sense if the tracks were submitted as mp3's (160k minimum - 320k preferred) via yousendit.com or the like. If the mp3's are high enough quality there shouldn't be a noticeable problem with transferring them to WAV's and compiling said CD. Once all the tracks have been compiled and artwork sorted i'll send them to Ian Townsend to copy and distribute the CD's with artwork etc.

Once we know how many people are contributing we'll PM with costs (which hopefully should be minimal).

    Here are the relevant dates:

    Friday 7th July
Cut-off date for signing up to contribute 1 to 5 tracks as mp3's (160k minimum - 320k preferred). There'll be some double up so i'll let folk know as we go. Anyone who wants instruction on how to convert to mp3 PM me - it's dead easy . Worse case is we sort out another option for any technophobes.

    Friday 28th July
Deadline for submission of mp3's to myself via yousendit.com or email.

    Around 21st August
Ian Townsend will have the copies ready to be posted out to contributors

I know it's a tighter timeline than the usual Swaps but this isn't nearly as grand a scheme, and may only end up as one or two CD's worth of tunage.

So far these good people have expressed interest in contributing (PM me if you're on the list but NOT going to be sending tracks and i'll remove the name). If you are interested but not on the list sing out on this thread:
    - Ian Townsend (co-conspirator)
    - Xavier Blake
    - Beddoes
    - admcc77
    - Nick Cope (whose already send a bunch of stuff anyway ;-)
    - maWhie
    - someblokecalledfuz
    - Headless mermaid
    - mendoza
    - space debris
    - left hand corner
    - spirito santo
    - LDJB
    - TOWNY
    - eric-adams
    - Jason Doormat
    - Brother Logic
    - Lady J
    - flytipper
    - Striker
    - Soundsville
    - emperor tomato ketchup
    - Joe M'geek
    - k33gan
    - amino

I've found a handful of groovy stuff aimed at wee-yin's but i'm sure some of you out there have some crackers.

I'd be happy to organise (although i'm in Australia which could be logistically awkward ;-) and do the cover/tracklist etc. We could even do it as MP3's and then pop it up on Rapidshare or something to save money and plastic.

    What say you?

I'd be up for that.. My brother has been bugging me to do a CD for his daughter for ages so I'm keen

Did you see the thread on 'Fuzzy Felt Folk', new comp of things from kid's records and other bits on a similar vibe from Trunk Records? Quite different from the funkier version you're proposing, but in a similar area.

Beddoes mentioned he was compiling one from US kids' records, too.

The Trunk comp sounds great and is on my list along with the Stark Reality reissue as the start of my daughters record collection along with a few Sesame Street records i've found recently.

I hope she likes music ;-)

I can yousendit you an MP3 of the Do Re Mei Childrens Choir doing a funny version of Spooky if you like. Are you also looking for music with, how do you say, simplistic/children friendly chords? Like the Elephant Called Slowly soundtrack for example - to me, some of those tracks have a simple musical theme that I would've thought a child would stomp along to...

I can send you a nice Melody House one too. In fact, I'll do it now and post the links here.

sounds like a good idea! I would be up for making a contribution. Got a bunch of stuff that would make the grade I think.

only last week I found a batch of kids educational records at a boot fair.

Anyone heard of 'macdonald and evans educational recordings limited' ??? also found on 7" 'listen move and dance 1" by vera gray only days after beddoes mentioning them (no electronic wierdness though ) and a mysterious private press 7" by 'james butt' called 'little boy dances, suite 2' on 'sphere records' is just solo piano pieces, but one or two of them are really very nice.

oh and come monday I'm thinking you may have to update your avatar sergio paradise bring on the saxondale! (edit) to you get bbc down there?

It sounds like we've got the makings of a fun little project here. Thanks for the offer of helping out Ian. I suggested mp3's due to my location so having someone over there makes a CD more do-able. I'm really not fussed if it's a proper CD or mp3's - whatever the consensus is will suit me.

Thanks for those mp3's Nick, i'll have a listen at work on Monday.

I'm thinking of music created specifically for children (and possibly BY children). My point of reference being the Susan Sesame St. one and Bill Cosby's anti-drug album. The 'Listen, Move and Dance' EP/LP's certainly qualify too. The music wouldn't have to be funky necessarily but that's up to whomever wants to take part anyway.

So, whomever is interested tell us on this thread and we can get the ball rolling.

PS: maWhie - what's Saxondale? We get some BBC stuff here but I had to order the original Partridge stuff from OS. Jurassic Park!

I've been amassing stuff for my own little comp/mix on this theme, but I have several good extra tracks that would probably work well for this project.

Well that would rule out all but one of those MP3s I put up then! Agh, thought I had Drill Team from the Carpet Square album on Melody House recorded in, but alas I don't. Still waiting for my new turntable to arrive, but I could record it and send it over when I do - it's very groovy. Unless someone here else can offer an MP3 from their copy...

I presume you know this one, right?

Hilarious but totally wrong for your project!

Just make sure you put that Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner track from Spin A Magic Tune on. Super song and nice and short for the kiddies short attention span!

Don't forget 'Sing Song' by Maggie Henderson from the 'Ragtime' LP, with ace organ solo by The Hawk.

'Motorists Are We' from the same LP is also good, with it's mental 'Car, lorry, lorry, car' chorus - it's also got Fred Harris on it, which is a definite plus point (Fred's a huge Harold McNair fan, apparently!)

Looks like this is going to work better as an MP3 affair. So, can I ask anyone who wants to take part to PM me and i'll give you my email address to send stuff to. I'll compile it and do the artwork and post a link to it on the forum.

    Some stuff I have:
Ugga Wugga - Muppet Show (kooky fuzzed groover)
One of these things is not like the other (?) - Susan from Sesame Street
A Vic Flick Sesame St. knockoff with some good stuff
Listen, Move and Dance Vols 1,2 & 3
Space Songs (and most of the others in the boxset) - Tom Glazer etc.
A Melody House Disco for Kids LP with one funky cut.
Fingerfun Songs (?) with 'Five Little Robots'
Solid British Hat Band - Mister Monday & Other Songs for the Teaching of English (nice folk)

Possibly, Mark, assuming it was aimed at kiddies in the first place.

    Send 'em thru people!

I'm down. Just let me know what to do. But does it have to be strictly records for children or can it just be "childish" records?

If you're looking for music actually played by children, the Children Of All Ages on Embryo has some kids making rhythmic sounds to some jazzplayers improvisation. Even has some funky parts.

Hmm, it's a good question Herr Mermaid. I reckon music aimed at kids, or played by kids (ie. Langley Schools project type stuff). Ultimately i'm trying to put a collection together of tracks that a little kid might like that's NOT THE WIGGLES!

I'll PM those who've expressed interest and anyone else please PM my good self.

    Cheers,
    Jamie.

I've got that Rauber LP mentioned earlier - there's a great jazz tune on it for a kid's work out...
Plus some kiddie stuff à la Sparky & His Magic Piano or Hitchcock's Ghost Stories for Young Persons...

    So please count me in...

I should be up for this. Would make a nice gift for a friend.

I can supply some Scandi stuff - GodaGoda, BennysBadekar - and some US.

As for records made by kids, I have The Vigs which features a 7 year old drummer giving it some. Maybe not 100% right for this project but I'll copy it for you.

    PM me sergio,

I think it should be kept strictly to records made for or by children. So is this just gonna be a mp3 affair I liked the idea of an actual CD being produced, just kinda makes it all seem more worthwhile.

also at what age level do we draw the line, are high school jazz bands allowed

I've got another one by them called 'Goodbye Rainbow' - nice sleeve that looks like it should be a $$$ psych rarity but isn't! There's also one by Nola York called 'Skyhigh' which has a couple of nice tracks on it.

Found an American acoustic LP a while back in an excellent Ben Shahn sleeve called 'Music For 1's & 2's' by Tom Glazer. All original tunes too. Some real simple crackers on it....I'll give it another spin and select something.

And the proper mad Little Dan The Midget Man by Tom Loach from The Magic Swing LP on Fontana has been popular with little 'uns round here too.
