    Default Expensive Mistakes

I think someone suggested this as a thread a bit ago so...

First time I ever went on ebay I got overexcited and spent waaay too much on Danny and Lynda, 'Gospel'. I've played it maybe three times since and have no particular desire to ever listen to it again.

Isn't it strange how Paypal doesn't seem like real money?

paypal money just seems like record tokens.

maybe i should actually take money out of my account and not spend it on records.

a couple of times I've bought records purely by going on the description given by the seller, what a foolish mistake to make!!

gotta say some folks can be trusted though

"try and avoid ANYTHING that has a "illfolkfunkbreaksraerstabs" type description"
Yeah, if they try and cover about twenty genres I'd be suspicious. "Fuzz, garage, psych, northern, folk, breaks". I guess the idea is that, even though they are not that similar, people who are into garage-psych tend to be into northern soul (or are more likely to be into that than techno).
On the other hand there are some sellers that I trust and if they say something is good then I believe them. Also, you have to take the odd risk, which I guess is how I got to know about the trustworthy sellers and also how I got to pick up some weird stuff that I never would have got otherwise.

30 sec sound clips have had my pants down a couple of times, sounds great till it comes through the post and you get it on a deck then after 30 secs of bliss, it takes a swift nose dive into hell...Turkish sellers are primo at this

When buying stuff from yanks and I decide to check out their other items to keep the postage down has left me with a few duds. Like that Coven lp mentioned elsewhere. But if I'm unsure I usually bung a lowish bid in so the mistakes aren't too bad and the postage is ok.

worse when someone snipes you for the LP you wanted, and leaves you with just the $2 punt LP and a $12 postage fee!

My costly mistakes are usually due to my memory. I buy a crap record for cheap, then commit the artists name to memory so as not to make the same mistake again. Then months later i see a more expensive record (by said crap artist) and think, oooo that name rings a bell must be a record ive been looking for. Get home and realize my error. bugger.

My most costly non-record related error was probably when i worked for a large insurance company in the pensions dept. Came back from a nice liquid lunch (abbots ale and complex calculations are not good bed fellows) and accidently added an extra 0 to someone’s pension quotation... he wasn’t happy when he found out that he wasn’t getting what id quoted...oops

Totally - been there though in that case I get it sent media mail to my Dad in NJ and wait 6 months to hear it.

Usually I what happens is after I have the one I want and then see what else is going.

Hehe.... i think i fall into this category.... when i used to smoke, i was a nightmare...

i'd get it into my head that i wanted to get some, for example herbie mann lps, and bid on 12 of 'em whilst high, end up winning them all and them have it occur to my unstoned brain that thats 12 separate postage costs from the US of 12- 14 dollars.... schoolboy error...

    I quintuple that notion

and have once or twice been dissapointed after picking something up from just hearing the sample (or very relieved after being outbid for stupid money and then later finding out that a supposed secret squirrel is just cheapo £5 fodder )

Theres always a danger of getting dudd (not moore related of course) stuff on ebay when digging in unknown musical territory

A few months back while wading through 'Bay I noticed the Smoke LP (on Sidewalk) I had been lusting after, with only like 50 seconds to go and I placed my bid in a hurry - only to find out a few moments later I had won an 80's Greek reissue for the price of an original copy - well, at least it was in mint condition & the sound is actually pretty good so I guess I'm set with this copy..

I did that exact same thing with the Australian (I think) band Luv Machine - except it wasn't a vinyl re-issue it was a cd. I haven't even got a cd player. Luckily I didn't pay the price of an original, that was what drew me in, it was only a few quid.

I paid thirty quid for a reissue of 'get the picture' by the Pretty Things...I was so disgusted that when I replaced it with a nice New Zealand first press for a tenner, I just gave it away.
"Not only that but the WHOLE COVER is UNCREASED with only 2 or 3 TINY creaselines near the opening edge about half way down!!!! In the same place (about half way down the opening edge), there is an absolutely TINY and PERFECTLY repaired split" (xxxrecords)

I've never really made any expensive mistakes because of my budget. But I have made a couple kind of cheap mistakes and they still bother me. Some time back I got the wrong Face Dancer record (I think it's About Face, doesn't have 'Change' on it) for $1, but it still pisses me off. When I see the record in the pile I think man, I could have used that dollar to buy a burrito or something! Lately I've been getting records that turn out to have 1-2 good songs and I see that as kind of a waste too.
See, you don't get those haircuts on your mp3s.

I paid a tenner for East of Eden - Jig a Jig 7" from Eil, and have since seen tons of them for pennies a pop.

Yep, I gathered that when I got their paper catalogue in the post. More than a handful of records were priced as though they were the last remaining copy in the world.

Close. Anyway the track I wanted it for wasn't nearly as good as I remembered so maybe it was a lucky escape in the end that helped me avoid an expensive mistake.
Just remembered that I did the same thing with a re-issue of an LP by Ame Son, paid a tenner for it and thought it was a good price, then realised it was a re-issue. On the other hand, it's a lovely gate-fold sleeve in nice condition. On the third hand I don't like the record that much either.

Well maybe the disappointment blinded me to the music and I must admit I haven't listened to it thoroughly yet so it may grow on me. First impressions however were that although I quite like the last track on side one the rest of it left me kinda cold. It's got this kind of Glen Branca type jerkyness to it and I'm not really a fan of that sound.
