Default Late 70s AND 80s Albums by VV favourites that are actually good

Hesitantly picked up a late (1987) Ravi Shankar LP - Tana Mana - featuring George Harrison (auto harp) and Al Kooper. It is bloody marvellous!!! "Sitar meets Brian Eno" - atmospheric subtle electronics and sitar. Stand-out track is West Eats Meat which is a groovy delight (great bass).

Wondered if anyone else knows / rates this album?

Are there other albums, by VV favourite artists, you initially feel inclined to leave alone, due to the late-seventies / eighties date, that actually prove rather good?

There's that Acker Bilk LP from the early 80's with a nice CTI sounding tune on. Can't find the LP at the moment to give the title, or the exact year for that matter. In fact Acker isn't really a VV favourite is he (well maybe in Lord Thames world ) but you know what I mean.

Kinda related (but maybe a bit Mojo )...I was highly unimpressed with a 1970 Elis Regina LP I picked up at a boot a month ago.

Undeterrred I picked up an Elis Regina Greatist Hits comp CD from Virgin a few weeks later in the £1.99 sale and the three tracks on it that get me nodding are all from 1977 onwards. Don't think she classifies as a VV favourite artist tho' does she? I'll shut up and go to bed.

Great records, but they don't really count, for two reasons: neither artist is a VV fave, and neither made anything before these records.

But they should be VV faves! The Bobb Trimble especially is really something special.

In a kinda VV way (not artists but comps) some of the later editions of Top of the Pops and Hot Hits etc etc that went into the beginning of Punk/New Wave and i guess Chart pop had some "interesting interpretations" of songs...some of course had great extended breaks or used different instruments and some definately had great interpretations of 80's new wave...but maybe not to everyones taste.....

I've got the Luz das Estrelas album by Elis from the early 80s and it's got at least 3 tracks I love to death. They're glossy 80s ballads rather than dirty psych funk, but what the hell.

Everbody seems to be treading on eggshells about what is or isn't a 'VV artist' or a 'Mojo thread'. Bollocks to all that, I say. Anyone want to talk about Midnight Star?

'Black Widow' by Lalo Schifrin is quite late and quite good.

    We're struggling aren't we?

I love this album - there are a couple of Lalo non-soundtrack LPs around that time - 'Gypsy [something]' (can't remember the name) is pretty good to.

Probably struggling because there aren't many out there!

Neil Diamond's latest album is brilliant - though not sure if he is a VV fav? There was that Elton John album too, when he went back to his early 70s sound which was OK - Songs from the West Coast. And what about the new James Last album 'They call me Hansi' featuring rap and a cool cover by Anton Corbijn.

Allegro Jazz Band. Two albums from 1985 and 1987 if I remember correctly. Both has a couple nice jazzfunk cuts.

..that sounds interesting, can you give any specific examples so I know which volumes to look out for?

Hey now don't be knocking Mr. Money! I am the proud owner of an official Eddie Money concert t-shirt from '86 ... always get envious stares when I wear it (when people stare its cause they are truly jealous - right?)

BTW - the next generation of Vultures will be paying big $$$ for Hoff and EM OG's and even more for the cassettes (you heard it here first)

For his services to chazza shops across the land, Sergio must surely be a bona fide VV favourite, no?

agreed on the home cooking, always thought he had a nice pair of trainers there - difficult to keep clean when you're cooking in a small kitchen like that though....

Isn't he in the Lords of Lounge bit? If he is, then surely he's part of the canon. And if he isn't he should be.
