Default Neil Young - Cortez the Killer

Just curious - is there someone here who does not like that song?

To me it just feels impossible to be really into music and not be at least slightly on the positive side to it - and I haven't met someone who really dislikes it yet.

Not trying to be elitist or anything, so don't take offense if you feel you're really into music AND hate that song, cuz that's just what I wanted to know if there are people that do. Cause there has to be, right?

    Question

Never heard it. So I must be totally against music, right?*

*(A rhetorical question - no reply necessary or sought).

Not hearing it amounts to nothing... please try and find it and get back to me if you hate it, cause I really wanna find someone who has heard it and dislikes it.

Sorry to disappoint....but i love the track. In fact the whole of the Zuma album is great. Though Cowgirl in the Sand is even better.

Eric - if you ever want to pop 'round and have a listen the door will always be open.

At first I bought records, then I started to collect records; now I merely accumulate records.

    Rich -
There's a little four-piece from up north somewhere that made a few records in the 1960s that I have a feeling you might get into. They were rather on the popular side, so you probably won't have heard of them, but should you ever get the chance to check out any of their platters, I do most heartily recommend The Beatles.

    HOW CAN IT BE POSSIBLE??!!

Now, I have some Beatles records... I just really, really detest the whole '1000 Books You Must Read Before You Die', '50 Greatest Films Of All Time', 'tick this off your list' mentality. I'll happily accept recommendations but if I'm told that I should listen to something, or I must read so and so, or I have to visit oojamaflip my first response is an 'exactly why should I?' There's a lot of music out there. To assume that everybody has heard one particular song, let alone has an opinion on it, is a little presumptuous. It'd be very sad if we all only listened to the same stuff. I don't feel that I'm a lesser being for not having heard one song; I know it for a fact that I'm not.

Again, no reply necessary or sought.

Yeah, I detest that stuff too... my question was more aimed at those who had heard the song in question... or didn't have and wanted to take it as a recommendation to listen to it...

A year or two back my friends andI tried to work out if there was any book we had all read and we failed to find a single one. Though songs require a lot less effort.

However Zuma is not the Neil Young album that turns up on lists.

I've heard 'Valdez in the Country'...

And the guy who did Neil Young on 'Stars in their Eyes' was funny, but I don't think he was doing that one.

..and deciding against (& dumping) perfectly potential 20p finds a priori is not..? But I think you were spot on about the lists of "1000 books" etc.

Eh? I never said anything about dismissing or throwing records out without listening to them. Try again, a little more slowly this time...

Can someone post the lyrics to Cortez the killer, it's just a total digretion in the end when he starts singing about some girl who will be there? Has he ripped of the lyrics from Leon Gardner's Be there?!?

He came dancing across the water
    With his galleons and guns
    Looking for the new world
And the palace in the sun.
    On the shore lay Montezuma
With his coca leaves and pearls
In his halls he often wandered
With the secrets of the worlds.
And his subjects gathered 'round him
Like the leaves around a tree
In their clothes of many colors
For the angry gods to see.
And the women all were beautiful
And the men stood straight and strong
    They offered life in sacrifice
So that others could go on.
    Hate was just a legend,
    War was never known.
    People worked together
    And they lifted many stones.
Then they carried them to the flatlands
But they died along the way
Then they built up with their bare hands
What we still can't do today.
And I know she's living there
And she loves me to this day
    I still can't remember where
Or how I lost my way.
He came dancing across the water
    Cortez, Cortez
    What a killer.

I prefer 'Down By The River' - Neil's own take is my third favourite version after Buddy Miles's utterly filthy interpretation on his 'Them Changes' LP and The Dutch Rhythm Steel & Showband one...

And the idea that The Aztecs, of all people, were a gentle, peace loving civilisation really belongs in the 'bad ideas for a song' thread. Uhm, Neil, you ever wondered what those altars, pyramids, and very sharp blades were used for out there...not for making salad, surely?
