Default Bubblegum Cards

Never actually collected (i.e kept) any of these but as a child in the sixties was obsessed about the images on The Outer Limits bubblegum cards.

There was also quite a gory set based on 'true events' from World War 2 (I think) and I remember one of the cards was called 'Death of a Frogman' or similar. Can anyone remember what the series of these cards was called or have any links to where they may be posted up.

Really liked all the film / TV tie-in ones as well... seem to remember having most of the Batman TV series ones. I think when put together the backs of them all formed one big picture?

Just musing.....

Ohmigod.. that's the one! Cheers O!

With one glance I'm six years old and temporarily back in the park outside school avoiding Jock the limping Park-Keeper (shrapnel) telling me about the family of bloody owls in the oak trees (which I could never see) and feverishly tearing the shiny, grease-proof paper off another bubblegum packet to see if i've got a 'Death Of A Frogman' spare to trade with Mark Ranasinghe or Vincent Brackley.

And I can smell that stiff powdery bubblegum which had the texture of cardboard.

Cheers.

(sniff.....)

I used to collect cards that had stills from Hammer Horror films but with stupid comments in speech bubbles. Don't know what they were called but I thought they were hilarious. I always used to throw the bubblegum away, probably irresponsibly.

I remember the Superman/Star wars cards at infant school, 5p a pack and a strip of bubblegum, bargain. Then it all went football '80' pannini, no gum but they were stickers

I still have my complete sets of 'Batman' cards and 'Man from UNCLE' cards from the early 60s: my mum made me swap all my 'Civil War' cards as she thought they were too bloodthirsty for me ...

My mum wouldn't let me have gum
I did have all the Shell Petrol Historic cars coins, insisted on Brooke Bond tea for the pretty animal cards and had all the Harem Scarems that came with crisps (the shrunken head was the most sought-after in my playground). But my pride and joy was a set of 3D endangered species cards that came with cornflakes or something. The orang utan was my favourite.

If you're ever at the Rastro in Madrid go to the square at the foot of the hill and you'll find a corner full of young lads furiously swopping and trading stickers. Of course it's all pokemons and panini, but it's still a sight that fills you with a warm glow.

I used to collect The Planet Of The Apes cards, too. Still got a hundred or so knocking about. I got an original wax wrapper rom e-bay a few years ago and that has pride of place in my office.

I'm pretty sure these were given out at Esso garages - had a few myself, I remember the penguins. That 3D effect was great. Giveaways these days are rubbish - all commercial tie ins with crappy films. I remember collecting Famous Red Indian busts with Cornflakes, and playing with soldiers that my Dad got in his cereal 20 years earlier. I was absolutely obsessed with the Dr Who cards you got in Weetabix, following on from the dr Who badges they gave away in Sugar Snaps - yes, promotional material - but not hard sell. Green Shield Stamps, World Cup Coins, Shell Oil Wildlife Sound EP's...all gone. And they call it progress...

Default A&BC BATTLE GUM CARD # 8 Death of a Frogman 1966

Hi
I saw your comment about this set of cards (I knoe it was left sometime ago). I was just clearing my garage and found loads of things from my youth, including nearly the whole set. Do you know of any sites that discuss cards like these? Are you a collector?

Stewart

Hi Stewart

I was just musing about these cards from my long distant youth. A brief flick around Ebay round at the time of this thread (after Peretti's masterful detective work) reveals that these cards fetch a respectable amount of money.

Go to Ebay and type in varying combinations of A&BC Battlecards Battle Cards, etc etc and you'll see the kind of prices they go for.

Sellers seem to sell them individually as most people are looking for cards to make up complete sets.

If you're happy to part with them you may well make a good bit of cash.

Mad innit?
