  • Bill Brewster Chinwag - Thursday, 5 September 2013 (Outlaws Yacht Club, Leeds)

Nothing to do with me but the "interrogator" is an old friend and this month Chris has VG+ Poster Bill Brewster under the spotlight...

Previous guests have been Andrew Weatherall, Dave Beer and Alan McGee... Top venue with some great beers behind the bar...

    When: Thursday, 5 September 2013

Where: Outlaws Yacht Club, 38 New York St, Leeds

The big-up: CHINWAG is delighted to welcome yet another ‘without whom…’ guest.

If you LOVE music and you LOVE talking about music you will not want to miss this rare opportunity to be up close and leaning in to our Chinwag conversation with BILL BREWSTER.

How could we possibly begin to describe Bill Brewster? Best-selling co-author of the critically acclaimed ‘Last Night a DJ saved My Life’ – arguably the definitive history of DJing- as well as a slate of other titles, Bill’s knowledge and passion for music and its socio-cultural-historical backdrop is unquestionable.

Born and bred in Grimsby, he experienced his musical epiphany at The Warehouse in 1980, listening to Ian Dewhirst and from then on the die was cast for a lifelong adventure into and inside of his love affair with music.

Bill is a writer, DJ, record collector, music lover, family man and Grimsby Town supporter. We will be exploring the outer limits of his life-long passions and no doubt he will be spinning some mind-bending cuts for your delectation.

As with our previous nights, this is a unique, special and intimate event, with limited capacity. Tickets are £5.00 and please be advised to book early at ; http://outlawsyachtclub.bigcartel.co...hinwag-e-tcket

Chinwag is a lean-in and listen conversation with people we'd love to meet and chat with. Like listening into an intimate conversation between two people having a drink, Chinwag is an opportunity to get to know someone a bit better, to find out what makes them tick, to hear a few tales, to share some insights and ask a few questions.

Clip below gives you an idea of what to expect...

Crikey. Last time I saw Andy he was sporting a waxed tache and clothes of a coal miner from yorkshire circa 1930.
What a dude, that fookin' beard is immense!
    Top bloke is our Weathers.

      Agreed...

I think I forgot to mention on top of the conversation insight you get some tunes from the guest to supplement the quality libations (Kernel in stock along side some top Wiild Beer Co action)... Outlaws do an occasional kid friendly record fair... what more could you ask for... a model venue if ever here was one..!

The Andrew Weatherall selection is here... very VG+ friendly selection...

@MPFlapp That night with Sherwood they're talking about around the 5 minute mark was the Soundclash night we were at, wasn't it? Or was that Alex Patterson? My memory's as bad as Weatherall's ...

It was the Alex Patterson night we were at... I remember this one for the sub-bass from the PA... and it's rib shaking ability... there was a couch in the venue well positioned for maximum bass action... If I recall we spent a large portion of the evening beached on it nodding dog style grinning from ear to ear...

As for the why we were in Leeds or how we got there - I've no idea, but the couch and the PA are well noted

I also remember standing with my hands on an amp at chucking out time so the bouncers would think we were with the crew and we could stay on for some extra shenannigans.

@GMC do you know Chris from London or Leeds? No need ot go into detail, just curious.

Quick bump on the event one - this week Thursday night Leeds... I've heard a rumour Bill and Chris are going to conduct the interview/conversation whilst playing twister... as a means to demonstrate the link between the origins breakdance and modern DJ culture - first time in front of a live audience - Not to be missed

thanks for the tip off on this one - most enjoyable so far (I'm up to the "quiller theme") - how good did the Slits "fade away" sound though - such a long time I've not heard that one.

And that reggae version of the Doctor Who theme - I think he played that one when he was on the OST show?

Finished off the mix yesterday - very entertaining.

A couple of questions - what was the Johnny Cash? track - fantastic guitar riff and the version of "tainted love" - was it by the Stray Cats?!
