  • top five soul dancers

i'll post mine up a little later on, but just wondered what everyone here would have as their top five soul dancers. i tend to prefer pre crossover, but any time really.

that we actually own? I actually went digging through the soul box and came out with a nice handful if 45s I hadn't played in a while. Here's a few that I rate:

Rex Garvin - I Gotta Go Now (Up On The Floor) (Like)

Trade Martin - Work Song (RCA)

First Choice - This Is The House (Where Love Died) (Scepter)

Greg Perry - Head Over Heels (In Love) (Chess)

Barbara Mason - You Better Stop It (Arctic)

    honorable mention:

The Incredibles - There's Nothing Else to Say (Audio Arts)

Vibrations - Gonna Get Along Without You Now (Okeh)

Tony Fox - I've Got To (Do It To It) (Calla)

    ok, I'll stop now.....

        Groovettes "Think It Over Baby"
        Del-Tours "Sweet and Lovely"
        Johnny Honeycutt "I'm Coming Over"
        Cairos "Stop Over Looking Me"
George Pepp "The Feeling is Real"
        Danny Moore "Somebody New"
Seven Souls "I still Love You"
        Ruby "Feminine Ingenuity"
        Patrinell Staten "Little Love Affair"
Del Larks (Butch c/u) "Just You and I"
Otis Lee "Hard Row to Hoe"
        Earnest Mosley "Stubborn Heart"
Walter & Admirations "Man oh Man (What Have I done)"

Some of those mentioned above are four figure records on original 45, so Goldmine comps or suchlike could be the way forward. Or unless you have deep pockets, sir.

They sure are. About half a dozen or so of those that I listed have been reissued on 45s (mostly legitimately) in recent years and shouldn't be too difficult, or expensive, to acquire in that way.

I thought the point of this thread was that YOU were meant to be posting up YOUR top five soul dancers, or am I somewhat off the mark here???

Just so I can't be accused of being a cantankerous old git, here's my Top Ten:

                        1) Little Willie John "I'm Shakin'" (King)
                        2) Betty Lloyd "I'm Catching On" (BSC)
                        3) Larry Trider "Carbon Copy" (Coral)
                        4) Margie Joseph "I Can't Move No Mountains" (Atlantic)
                        5) Ruby Andrews "Just Loving You" (Zodiac)
                        6) The Exits "You Got To Have Money" (Gemini)
                        7) Sharon Jones "Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Is In" (Daptone)
                        8) Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" (Tamla)
                        9) Dusty Springfield "Love Power" (Philips)
                        10) The Staple Singers "Tripping On Your Love" (Stax)

If anyone wants to pipe in with a "that's not soul, that's rock'n'roll" or "that's not soul, she's white" etc etc, then just don't. Oh, I almost forgot, this isn't Soul Source, is it?

Yes, you are correct. I was rummaging through the soul box and then realized that the Barbara Mason was sitting in the 'new 45s that are spun with regularity' pile and that I couldn't do a top five soul tunes list without it. I neglected to change what I had written already, though. That's what a couple of beers will do to ya.....
