      • The Revenant

I enjoyed this a lot, but don´t think Di Caprio deserved an Oscar for it. I think anyone who was mauled by a bear would give a similar performance.

I also saw Backcountry, a Canadian survival horror film which also features a bloke being eaten by a bear. It's a bit like that one where the scuba divers get left behind by the boat and the bloke gets eaten by a shark, or the one where the couple get trapped on a skilift and the bloke gets eaten by wolves.
I love films where blokes get eaten by wildlife.

        • Bone Tomahawk

Western that takes a bit too much time before ending up in Texas Chainsaw Massacre territory.
Kurt Russell's good, but Richard Jenkins is the best, playing a Walter Brennan old-timer role. The language is great and the troglodytes are ace.

          • Just finished watching The Knick recommended if you like gory period dramas with home made condoms made from animal intestines, opium dens and lots of dubious cocaine use, but seriously it was an excellent show hope they do a third season.

            • For some reason I've managed to get through nearly forty years without ever hearing of the film "The Wrong Box". Quite astonishing. A black Ealing style comedy with a cast including John Mills, Ralph Richardson, Michael Caine, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, Nanette Newman and many more. Exactly my cup of tea. Here it is on tinternet...

Agreed - excellent film. The OST used to be quite expensive too some years back - never quite sure why?

                • 'Mum' on BBC2. A nice antidote to the diet of tripe that's currently being served up elsewhere.

                  • Interesting programme on modern gypsy music in Romania on BBC2 yesterday:

                    http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...ew-gypsy-kings

One of the guys featured is called "Dan The Badger" and hearing that every few sentences added some unintentional humour, although the modern "manele" music was funny enough, with all the wads of Euro notes being waved at every opportunity

                    • The Invitation

Good, slow-burning US indie psychological horror. John Carrol Lynch has got to be one of the scariest actors there is.

                      • noticed last night that the hip hop fashion documentary "Fresh Dressed" is now up on Netflix:

                        http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4209900/?ref_=nv_sr_1

bit too much on the high fashion stuff (didn't know Kanye did fashion now and never realised stuff like Sean John was so huge) and clips of catwalk shows is probably the most boring thing in the world, but still some nice early footage and photos

                        • Embrace of the serpent.

The story of the relationship between Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and last survivor of his people, and two scientists who work together over the course of 40 years to search the Amazon for a sacred healing plant.

                          Director: Ciro Guerra
Writers: Ciro Guerra, Theodor Koch-Grunberg (based on the diary by)
Stars: Nilbio Torres, Jan Bijvoet, Antonio Bolivar

Only good film I've seen in a while, even if the 'european explores the primitive world and discovers life's real values' is a bit cliché and simplistic despite it being based on a real story.

                          • Just finished watching the second series of 'The Leftovers' anyone who watched the first one will know it's pretty hard going but that basically followed the book of which their is only one so I don't know if the original author was involved or they were just given free reign to go crazy but an excellent watch. I bet 'Justin Theroux' cringed when he saw the script for the final episode!

Still as downbeat, depressing and weird as hell but a much better watch than the first one and more darkly comic than the first.

                            • I've been watching 'Stranger Things' on Netflix, a kind of melange of Close Encounters, The Goonies, ET, Poltergeist, Carrie, etc. with a John Carpenter-esque soundtrack. It sounds a bit post-modern and tedious but it is actually extremely entertaining and full of surprises, not least because it has a sense of genuine strangeness and real drama along with all the blink and you'll miss them pop culture references.

I feel like I've just come on here to agree with everyone today BUT I totally agree with this, very entertaining. I'm onto the 3rd episode and enjoying it. Lots of great music cues and snippets, I even spotted the Seeds in the first episode. I am annoying my wife by shouting out the 80's film references though.
