  • Films/ docus about beer?

A friend of mine wants to show a fun old film or documentary at the launch of his brewery.... i can't think of any off the top of my head (i keep coming back to Jan Svankmeyer's "Virile Games" short (guy watches football and drinks loads of her - much weirdness ensues) but it's not really properly about beer.

    Anyone know anything that fits?

Last time I was in London I spent a most enjoyable hour or so watching lots of beer-related short films at the BFI/NFC Mediatheque or whatever it's called nowadays. Not sure if it was a permanent thing but there were old beer commercials, THAT scene from Ice Cold in Alex, this geezer etc etc.

Yeah, gingham Kitchen has just informed me that the BFI are bringing out a DVD of this stuff. Sounds perfect.

When did people stop winking at their beer? I haven't seen anyone do it for ages, but unwinked-at beer was unthinkable in 1970s adverts.

I saw Tyrannosaur the other day, which has some grim scenes of Peter Mullan arguing with his pint. You could team it with clips from Raining Stones, Nil By Mouth, Blue Velvet and the Begby scenes in Trainspotting for a more morally instructive brewery opening party.

Not sure if this is too new to be old old, but The Beer Hunter might fit your bill?

I wonder how many times Michael Jackson says the word "beer" in that video?

It would make a good drinking game, wouldn't it?

MJ's a legend. There's a US doc called Beer Wars, but it's more about the industry than the drink. Off piste, there was a great US show called Brew Masters which followed Dogfish Head around.
