Egg and chips is associated with a working-class diet, and one writer has even cited it as a dish which members of the middle classes might find 'shameful' in wanting.
I'm as bourgeois as Julian Barnes and can certainly attest to this. My mother would be aghast at the thought of me enjoying a plate of egg and chips at home. Fine if you are at a "caff" of course - but at home? Shame.

Mushy peas ( one of your five a day as our local chippy helpfully point out) compliments corned beef beautifully. One to consider for your next dinner party....possibly.

Heston Blumenthal, owner of the Michelin star award-winning Fat Duck restaurant in Berkshire, wrote in The Guardian that "You can't get much more British a dish than fried egg and chips.

        Bollocks, Heston.

I eat 'em all the time over here in bars and cafes that may not have three Michelin stars and be voted the best restaurant in the world, but at least don´t give me the shits.

I have long proposed that the Spanish flag should have a big fried egg on it.

My favourite dinner is corned beef, double egg and chips. I eat all sorts of fancy stuff and enjoy it but, realistically, that's the one for me. The heart wants what it wants. That said, I am rather common.

I love mushy chips - delicious.

The chippy near me was bought by Sean Bean for his nephew to run. Apart from your Sheffield classics (cheesy chips, chips and breadcake, etc) there is a Boromir Special and a Sean Bean Meat Feast.

That's my dad's favourite dinner. He's a bit common too. It's a bit like a sit com at my mater n' old man's place.

My mate got a kicking (football related) outside a Huddersfield fishery apparently he gave his Leedsness away by asking for scraps when any fool knows the local parlance is 'bits.

I heartily endorse this dish. Simple, yet effective. Balls to all this Shirley Valentine stereotype pish.

                    Mushy peas, though ...

Do they do anything Patriot Games-related? Egg & chips flambe?

Can I just say, the best breakfast egg dishes I've ever had were in Mexico. Huevos Rancheros banzai!

I think there's Lord of the Onion Rings too but no Patriot Games...

One of my favourite websites in the world is themed along similar lines to this fine post.

                          Egg, Bacon, Chips & Beans

Some of the interior shots and the joyous descriptions of egg consistency make me weep.
                          To infinity - and beyond!

I once got ham and egg and chips in old town Prague - it came pre-seasoned which annoyed me a bit - I refused to eat it and got a kicking outside [after I refused to pay ] and left .... now I poach eggs with one of those little microwave egg poachers - sometimes it works

Not a fan of eggs generally but have started eating them more recently as they are somehow right for breakfast. I do love the Turkish menemen that they serve in all the cafes round here for brunch.
