  • The 2015 Mince Pie Challenge Thread

Just had my first and second mince pies of the year. They came from Greggs, and were delightful, with a distinct accent on the citrus elements and an agreeably homemade look. Can anyone challenge my early dominance in this traditional VG+ sport? THE GAUNTLET IS DOWN.

At last the last count (20th October), MPC 15=11. I haven't added this week's consumption to the tally yet.

Flippin' eck you chaps are keen. Far too early for me I'm afraid. Are they a year 'round thing now? Could swear I saw some in the Co-op a few weeks back.

Promised to ask for the wife after telling her about this thread. Having never had 'Stollen' before and holding Christmas at home instead of the in laws for the first time in years if not ever which is the best to buy. I was in Aldi and saw their finest range one, any good or go cheaper it looked small? Oh and does it have booze in it?

Stollen has no booze generally I think. Always get mine from Lidl. Love the stuff. Very filling.

Cheers Candiman, that's one for Lidl, whilst on the subject is 'Panettone' worth getting in for the crimbo day table?

ie: these which I've never tasted either: http://www.lidl.co.uk/en/10707.htm?a...etail&id=28154

I find Panettone a bit too light and delicate, and not much flovour (as far as I can remember, it was a few years ago now).

I'm sure The Great British Bake Off has spawned forums if they didn't exist already. I wonder if they occasionally discuss the merits of certain genres of black stuff on them?

I can certainly vouch for Morrison's mince pies.

No booze in stollen. it´s terrific with a chilled glass of semi-sweet wine, though. Look at the ingredients - the marzipan must be made of almonds, not apricot kernels.

i don´t much like panettone, nor the hard and soft turrones (nougats) and chalky-dry polverones you get in Spain, although my family wolf them down by the kilo. I just corner the marzipan shapes early.

I´m thinking of making my own mincemeat this year. Anyone tried it? i'll use butter not suet, which looks too much like rice or maggots.
