Excellent start to the new series - and great casting of the mother-in-law.
Yes, she's Rachel Stirling's mother in real life (as I'm sure you know...). Loved the etiquette of University Challenge bit ("if you get a question right then a quick nod to your teammates as if to say 'I'm sure you knew the answer to that one' is just good manners" - or something along those lines)
Maybe I should give this another chance, loved the scenery and cant fault any of the actors involved but I watched the first episode and a bit of the second first time around last year and it reminded me of 'Last of the Summer Wine' (without the bath on wheels type stuff) so I gave up. It might be too subtle for my comedy tastes.
Saying that apart from absurd things like 'Toast of London' (finally got my father to notice Matt Berry, he loves that show) and 'IT Crowd' nothing has really grabbed me comedy wise over the last few years oh I did like 'Uncle' a bit and I did like that thing with Jonny Vegas playing a dealer but that's probably going too far back I guess.
I hate that Vic and Bob thing where they live in house, with Matt Berry as a neighbour in it.
Am I wrong are comedy dramas/sit-coms/sketch shows a bit shit these days? (not slating the detectorists by the way not seen enough to critique.)
EDIT. Caught up with 'Limmy's show via torrent recently and liked that) probably answering my own questions?!?! For context the last show I watched I thought was orginal and fall on the floor laughing funny was 'Snuff Box' on BBC 3 but it seemed to go un noticed by quite a few.
'Too Many Russells' as Stewart Lee might say.

Reason: Russells
Comedy at the moment is really good, in the 00s not mcuh was happening. but now there seems to be loads of it around and its all really good.
either that or my old age has mellowed my tastes..

Glad to see Detectorists back. Enjoyed the new episode.
On the good recent comedy, definitely with you on Toast (and the Matt Berry iPlayer things and, to a lesser extent, Snuffbox). I'll watch the new series of Peep Show. From the US, 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, Community, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Brooklyn 99 are ace. Portlandia is fun and very light. Despite myself, I also enjoy Modern Family, but it is very hit and miss, and New Girl, but it is often terrible.
Just watched it having missed all of Season 1. I liked it but would agree with the Empress that it was rather lacking in actual jokes.
But then we had just watched an episode of Inside Amy Schumer which is rather brash and obvious by comparison, though she may be suffering badly from the Sophomore Slump.
And speaking of loud US comedy I was enjoying awful stoner comedy Workaholics a lot but it ran out of steam and just became a lot of shouting sometime in Season 3. First two seasons are funny albeit stupid and loud. I've high hopes for Season two of Broad City which is slightly more subtle. Enough for the Empress to give it the thumbs up.
Enthusiastic vagueness passes for scholarship in the twilight world of the disc-jockey.
I'll try and persuade the wife to give them a go as it's getting much love all round. I recently watched 'Top Coppers' on BBC3 which was a 'Garth Merengh' like spoof on 70's cop shows and was mildly amusing but cheap and unoriginal really (to me the funniest part was the fact Jim Robinson from Neighbors played his dead dad he kept having imaginary conversations with in his locker, that and the guy playing 'Chief') but at the time it saddens me that Matt Holness did this (which is kind of the same thing but britcentric if that's a word and better!) and cant seem to get it commissioned:
EDIT: Watched the latest Matt Berry thing on Ghosts and laughed myself silly. I dont watch much american comedy but I find 'Ray Donovan' darkly comic in places and just a great cast, beautifully played and written.
