  • Copyright-free music

A few months ago we got a cheap Xiaomi Yi action camera and my son´s setting up a Youtube channel of our underwater exploits - angel sharks, garfish, octopus action, pretty anenomes etc. Yesterday we got some incredible footage of spider crabs fighting/mating.
Now he´s looking for cool music to accompany the footage. There are a lot of commons out there, but does anyone have any particular recommendations for sources?

Has some interesting records, not all of them 1930s, some creative commons stuff too.
Spirit Duplicator—collectable, charming, affordable... and also socially networked on FB / Twitter / Instagram.

      Check out: http://freemusicarchive.org/

There are different types of creative commons licences but basically as long as you give credit to the artist and its not for commercial gain your'e alright. I think if you are on Vimeo they have an archive of music also that is all cc in some way or another. Free to use any of mine if ye wants:

      Shameless Plug Alert!

I'm on a netlabel which posts it everywhere it seems to end up on all sorts of videos. Quite interesting to see what peeps do with it funnily enough a track I did 'telephones' seems to crop up on a lot of underwater diving footage!

My Personal favourite use of my music on a vid:

Someone on Vimeo used a track on some dubious Porn which I was displeased about and I cant find it but an amateur Model/Blogger/Youtuber did an actual semi storyline to one of my tracks which was impressive, seems to have gone now though. Glad I downloaded it a while back but I cant post it without her permission wouldn't be right. Yeah freemusicarchive is the way to go or any netlabel such as 'enough records' who have a great eclectic mix of sounds via their website, archive.org freemusicarchive etc. There's too much music online really, didn't a journo call the internet 'A graveyard of myspace' or some such.

cheers Eine and Amidar. The boy will be checking these links out at the weekend.
I really enjoyed the kelp forest clip, and the music does fit. One of the huge pleasures of snorkelling and diving is the sounds - intimate slurping, your own breath, distant pounding of surf, and an insistent scratching I´ve never managed to identify - think it might be sea urchins.

Yes I love how he's left all the ambient noises from the dive intact alongside the soundtrack.

Its amazing some of the quality creative commons music that is out there it's just the sheer scale of it that puts you off diving in. Freemusicarchive I believe has accounts by quite a few netlabels some of which are genre specific others like the one I'm on 'enough records' have quite a variety of artists to choose from. Everything from experimental electronica, chip tune, a guy who plays traditional Portuguese instruments alongside electronic beats to modern jazz rock and everything in between including lolicore (yep I had to look it up too!).

Here's a mix I did just using tracks from that one label downloaded from freemusicarchive except for the last track, was quite 'Cardiacs' obsessed at the time:

              https://www.mixcloud.com/enoughrecor...pecial-131126/

I'm only just getting to grips with new ways of consuming outsider art. I love the Bandcamp etc way of releasing music for free download (or cheap or free at lower bitrates however you want to do it) then being able to order the CD with a handmade cover in some cases a real piece of art. All that stuff is great and the collectible music of the future in my opinion and probably why I only generally buy reissues and second hand music on vinyl although not solely.

Its all developing and as said the sheer amount of it makes it harder than ever to find the diamonds. Creative Commons has given people a way of getting stuff out there but still retaining their copyright depending on the license used.

I once got talking to a guy about how he was scared to release his music on the web because of fear of it being stolen and copyright etc so I thought 'right he much be some kind of singer/songwriter' so he plays me some of his stuff and it was just load of cheesy loops (probably stolen anyway) put together badly in something like 'ejay', made me laugh.

I don´t think so. There aren´t too many jellyfish here, and when there are the sound is no different (fantastic Asteroids-style swimming fun, though. I swam through thousands of them last year ago without getting stung. David Cameron dipped his fat arse in once and got zapped - attajelly! ) .
Also I hear it over rocky seabeds, but not sandy ones.
