Penda's Fen DVD (for Hauntology/Folklore Tapes fans)
Penda's Fen DVD (for Hauntology/Folklore Tapes fans)
BFI have just put out a DVD of Penda's Fen. If you like old 'Play For Todays' infused with Mystical Englishness and set in around the past-haunted landscape of the Malvern hills then this will be bang up your alley
Think I'll watch it again pretty soon and try and make a bit more sense of it. It's incredibly well-timed though, with prevailing notions of England, Englishness, belonging etc. I'm off into 'essay' mode again aren't I? Just sit back and enjoy it!
And, on reflection, watch the main feature first and the interviews afterwards.
I think, that's think, that Penda's Fen is available as part of an Alan Clark At The BBC box set, so you may get better value that way.

It is- Volume 1 of 'Alan Clarke at The BBC'. It's about £50. I'm afraid I'm a shockingly sentimental old sap and I only have to see some juddery letraset over a colour-bleached image of the distant Malverns and I'm off in a reverie. The addition of 'Scum' in the box-set would shock me out of that sharpish
