I've just discovered collectingcandy.com, a US site but one that covers the history of the Curly Wurly in impressive depth, including the frustrating toffee lattice's brief foray into America.

Had my first curly wurly since the 80s last week. It seemed to be just as I remembered - unlike certain pyramidal Swiss confections I could mention.

I had a Creme Egg a while back and nearly vomited.
It tasted like the greasy candlewax KAKE BRAND cooking chocolate that my mum used to buy and I would sometimes try when raiding the top cupboard for raisins.

Grrrr the removal of dairy milk from Creme Eggs really got my goat but not half as much as my beloved Double Decker has changed over the years.

It was downhill all the way after they took the raisins out
God we lived like young princes back then.

The decision to combine it with elements of the 'Boost' bar was the final straw for me I was destroyed. The last one I had the nougat seemed to just separate from the base like they'd removed some magic Cadbury's glue to keep costs down.

'Nutty' and 'Texan' were my favourites. Both gone now but I think I'm a bit old for sweets anyway. In the news today 'Toblerone' fans are up in arms about the spacing of the triangles
I remember, as a child, thinking a walnut whip was the epitome of sophistication in the sweet world. They seemed to be only for adults, presumably due to cost.

I can just about remember when Curly Wurly's first appeared in the shops, I tried them but my favourite at the time was a Picnic:

Ha! Love it! To my great shame I don't think I've given the Cabana a second thought since the late 80s!

I was partial to.....well, anything surrounded by chocolate really!
One that I still think about is Golden Crisp.
Curly Wurly almost induced hysteria when it appeared in our top shop. They were bigger then weren't they?

Not the only one FO it's like they erased everyone's mind. Coconut and chocolate has always been a niche market with the 'Bounty' holding steadfast. My wife is older than me yet she has no recollection of 'Spangles', 'Pacers' or 'Apple Hubba Bubba'.

What I always thought was the epitome of chocolate sophistication was 'Fry's Chocolate Cream' bars because my mum always had one stashed away and still does not the same one mind that would be rank!

Oh and picnics do not look like that picture anymore that's if they ever did, I came to the joys of the 'Picnic Bar' late in life.

Wurd. A hounorable mention for MacIntosh's Golden Cup too. Used to eat a ridiculous amount of sweets pop and crisps as a school bound kid. A daily ten Embassy Gold in the trouser waistband too.

And what has happened to the once mighty Mars Bar? It seems to be shrinking in size before our very eyes! I remember feeling sorry for our continental cousins
when they would serve up an inferior sized candy creation....oh how we used to snort with derision when all Paul Hogan style we would whip out our enormous
chocs and declare: 'that's not a Mars...THIS is a Mars' brandishing what upon reflection looked and felt (but crucially not tasted) like a small log and now just looks like a largish twig!
