it's this coming Monday, 6th Oct. the Elbow Rooms is surprisingly easy to miss as the entrance is a bit dingy, but it's right opposite Disque & The Salmon.

          who's up for it then?

eclipsechaser (top bloke&#33 and i ended up being the only attendees at what's got to be one of the gigs of the year so far!

these guys are ridiculously good live. scandalous that they were playing on a dead Monday - they had about 40 people in the 'crowd', about half of whom seemed to be their regulars brought up from the West Country. regardless of numbers, they were really up for it from the start and worked through a blistering set including most of their 45 cuts and a couple of jazzier numbers that didn't make the LP. most 'funk' bands just can't cut the switch between simple grooves and genuine latin or jazz grooves, but these guys really can, and make it work.

they're a whole level of professionalism and talent above anyone I've seen on this funk scene so far. I'm not dissing any of the bands that have played HF&S, Texas Funk etc - it's just a statement of fact. all of the Baker Brothers are session-standard players. the star of the show is definitely awesome drummer Richard, who plays like a deranged Stewart Copeland and triggers samples along with the grooves, sings, shouts, dances... the works.

                      highly, highly recommended.

they could do with a stylist though... the guitarist looks (and dances) like a geography teacher

Sounds great, Ed - they are definitely a band near the top of my list worth checking.

If you're saying they're better than Speedometer in your opinion, then I'm in for a treat. BTW, Jay has posted soundclips of their new album over at witchsbrew.co.uk - er, OOOF!

November 6th at HF&S is gonna be..........words fail me.

I haven't seen Speedometer live so can't comment (although I rate their 45s highly).

We had a chat to the guys from Baker Brothers after the gig and swapped numbers with a view to getting them down to HF&S next year. If they're as good as they were last night, you're in for a treat.

Nick C - apologies for ringing you up pissed and raving about 'em while you were trying to get some kip

yeah theeman nice to finally hook up with you. Seriously those guys were cookin. Now I've seen a lot of bands in my time, not so many recently though, and those guys were hot. I mean there are not too many trio's in the world that have such a big sound.

And another thing. Those guys got stage presence. Forget all your tightly nit bands that play tight but never even look at the audience. This band connect with the audience. Be it with their stupid faces they pull when they get a tight groove, or the the guitarist explaning how he likes the bass to sound nice and dirty. A real blast to watch.
