  • Date advice

No, I'm not asking about what trousers I should wear with my leopard skin motif silk shirt, rather something a little more mundane.

I'm obsessed with knowing when a particular LP was released. Just the year is fine, but often there is no date anywhere to be found on the LP itself.

I also file my rips by year, so not having a date makes that tricky too.

Yesterday I bought a copy of this:
    https://www.discogs.com/Charlie-Byrd...elease/4616848

No date anywhere, so after a google search producing no clues, I clicked on the Discogs series link, and found that others in the same series had been dated in 1973, which seems likely from the packaging and other included ephemera.

Would any of you bother to take the search further, and if so, where would you go for information next.

Here is a shot in the dark.

The Japan copyright number as listed on discogs is (IIRC) 462972. Google 462973 andyou get Joe Satriani’ s “Surfin’ with Etc”. Also CBS. 1987.

I like the title of the 'Simon and Garfunkel' one 'Message to Young People' I don't know why that made me chuckle. In my morning haze I did think I was clicking onto a thread where you were going to ask about what music to play on a first date of which that 'Charlie Byrd' comp would be an excellent choice.

I wouldn't know how to check out the actual year but it's on a major so someone might have an idea. I'd wager they all came out at the same time but that's just me making a random guess. Someone will know, there are books dedicated to pure data like this in the UK so there must be the equivalents worldwide.

      Sorry my help sucks.

Hmm, that's useful. I'd never taken any notice of that number before. However it's almost certainly a 70s release, as it probably came out at the same time as the others in the series.

Also 462973 is a cat # not a JMA copyright number, as far as I can tell.

Thanks for that. I'm going to try and investigate the Japanese Music Association copyright number system. Could be useful.

Ha ha ha. Not at all. Every bit helps, and I think your hunch is right. I'm pretty certain the LPs in this series would have all come out the same year.
