  • What are your favourite LPs from Peru?

I did a bit of work for a bloke in Peru recently and asked him to pay me in LPs.

What should I steer him towards? I know nothing about Peruvian music. Nothing! Zilch!!

Oh, except for Yma Sumac, Moises Vivanco and Traffic Sound ...

Salsa/boogaloo stuff by Lucho Macedo, Alfredito Linares, Coco Lagos, Mario Allison, Nico Estrada: (¡Gozalo! comps on Vampisoul are a good guide )

Chicha /psychedelic cumbia by Los Mirlos, Juaneco su Combo, Los Destellos, (again, there's a couple of good comps of this)

Afro-peruvian stuff from Eva Ayllon, Lucila Campos, Peru Negro, Caitro Soto (lando is the rhythm to go for)

I can spend all evening watching huayno bands from the mountains.

      Laghonia?
I also know nothing about this sort of thing but I believe a lot of the internet prices are not what you would pay at a dealer there so you might as well try.

The Vampisoul Comps are a good place to start.

There are a few smashing Peruvian pearls I know of and would dive for:
        Los Holy`s
        Tarkus
        Telegrapg Avenue Vol. 2

and whole lotta 45s as well with Conjunto El Opio to begin with!

I went through a big Peruvian phase a few years ago, resulting in my 2013 xmas swap mix....

The LP I go back to most is the previously mentioned Telegraph Avenue - if you can get one of those off him, go for it!

Aguaturbia are also worth checking out if you like the sound of Jefferson Airplace meets Grand Funk Railroad.
And the St.Thomas Pepper Smelter and Pax.

Los York's - four LPs and a slew of singles at the end of the 60s. Prime fuzziness!!
