  • Ye Olde 78's

With the 10" thread doing so well (and I couldn't find another thread on the subject) I wondered how deep the love for 78's was on VG+?
I have been collecting them for years but usually ones with unusual titles or subjects or Jazz/Blues or even just for the beautiful art of the sleeve.
So I'd like (if I may) to show you some of my shellac and hope there are more out there lurking in boxes that are of interest.
I have added the year of release where I could

    1957

    1939

    1949

    1955

    1939

    1956

    1956

    1938

    1950

    1910 - probably my oldest 78 : more info http://sonicfield.org/2012/03/1841/

    Some nice 78's there!

I still don't have the hang on uploading photos (one day I will, I promise!) but I recently bought a 78 collection which was beautifully filed into 78 books, several of them containing selections from Bill Elliott's (Melody Maker journalist and co-founder of UK Rhythm clubs) hot 100 jazz records with accompanying newspaper reviews cutout and glued next to the respective disc. I'm still in the process of sifting through them but will try to get some images up soon...
Light surface marks, sleeve is torn near centre of opening (due to rough removal of disk by a moron)

Some good reading about the emergence of 78rpm collectors in the UK here:

Haven't had chance to read this one yet but for was recommended to me for further reading:

Did anyone get to the Greg's Greats record fair (house sale!) in Foxton at the weekend? He's local to me but I missed it this time. Must be one of the biggest sources for 78s these days.

Those aren't books, they're albums, and that's why they're still called albums.

I love the designs of 78"s, they are from another era. From the texture of the old cardboard to the typography, they are the originators of this vinyl craze

Fantastic Parlophone logo on the last 78", one I have never seen.

Unfortunately I don't own any 78"s anymore. I had 8 or 9 for years, but never had a gramophone to play them. Lack of space forced me to get rid of them (so I could fill the space with more 7"s)...

Great threat, please, more 78"s pron!
              ¡A tope con la vida!

HG - you've beaten me to some punches already - Johnny Dankworth, Jackie Wilson, Mel Blanc. Will post up a few in the next day or so. My attractions to 78s are exactly the same as yours, and I will forever wear a hairshirt for not buying this at a car boot when I had the opportunity (not realising the full majesty of the Bside at the time): https://www.popsike.com/HORSE-RACE-P...082907035.html

My only excuse was I had a hangover and I clearly wasn't thinking straight.

I posted these in the Finds section 2 or 3 years ago along with a Motor Car Noises 78 which I can't seem to find at the moment.
Thought I should put here too.
