Not bad, apart from the BBC play for today pastichy narration.

That's John Doran - pretty decent music journalist IMO.

Yes, I know. Of The Quietus, where he writes very good stuff. This was OK, but seemed dumbed down for the radio audience, and hardly scratched the surface, IMO.

It skimmed the surface but raised some interesting points. From someone who messes around with Synths to a certain extent those email exchanges/interview that came up alongside 'Syro' were quite an insane read. He goes to insane lengths to make music and push all sorts of devices to their limits. You never know what to believe, 'He' claimed to have a set up by the bed so when he gets up in the morning he can get straight on to doing projects and his info about changing his working set ups which was alluded to in the documentary was illuminating. Also interesting to note in those exchanges he claims to program and record everything in real time regardless of BPM.

He's a complicated character who writes insanely complicated music as well as some absolutely beautiful melodies and ambient pieces. I remember when 'Druqks' came out, I loved it but a lot of my friends were not digging the piano stuff at all. Time has proved the critics wrong on that I think.

            What was that then?

Maybe they couldn't handle the fact that their 'now' music hero wanted to dabble in 'then' music. I don't remember the whole album, but I can still play one track in my head, and I can remember the sound of the piano he used. Very beautiful. A totally different music for a different time of day, or a different place. I wish he'd be even more eclectic.

I hope he'll continue to confound and entertain.

Just after Syro came out two insanely long email exchanges came out from an electronic musician who knew him or they shared mutual respect. The guy was quite clued up equipment wise so it was quite a intricate conversation on that level and it also went a bit acid tinged and political. Like everything Aphex though it was shrouded in mystery eg: 'was it him', 'is he on a wind up' especially on some of the things that were said. The overall impression I got was because of how deep the conversation went about equipment and set ups ie: the synths he owns and some of the things he does with them it was him. For example he was speaking about some eighties synth I think and he'd been playing about with it and he'd worked out a glitch where he pressed a key on a midi controller and it cycled through all the presets in the unit at once. That's the sort of madness I'd expect from him but then there was also political stuff in there where I thought he's on a bit of a wind up, sort of.

I cant find it at the mo but it's probably on WATMM somewhere. When John Doran talked about him changing his set up when it got too comfortable that was one of the things 'he' talked about in those exchanges so that instantly put me in mind of it. Like I say and the documentary alludes to it's all about mystery with him. I think he likes DJ'ing and making music, experimenting and he's an intricate perfectionist.

I think he's destined to continue to confound and entertain there are few electronic musicians that can make music at his level note for note, beat for beat.

Thanks for the info about the Syro period exchange. Sounds entertaining.

Links appear to be dead, but an interesting site, none the less.

Don't know if waybackmachine is playing up but if you try 'open in new tab' that works for me. This is in firefox on a linux laptop, but yep I just tried direct clicking them and it blocks them for some reason.

Typical AFX, takes them down along with the masses of material he uploaded to soundcloud at the same time which became the unofficial 'SYROBONKERS' album/download.

Been reading through that Dave Noyze interview - interesting stuff. Never heard 'Window peeper' before. All the voice samples are from a Simon Harris breaks and beats LP. Hilarious.
