• Daly wilson big band

The world and his mother probably know all about them, but does anyone have amny recommendations of albums other the than 'The Exciting Daly Wilson Big Band ' - which is pretty pant wettingly good in my books up with Harry Roche's 'Spiral'.

personally i don't like any of their other records, but the exciting LP is one of my all-time favourites. the rest get a bit funk/disco-by-numbers and aren't as out-there nutty as Exciting. kerrie biddell did some solo LPs too, don't know what they're like tough. maybe dj sheep can help out here?

For what it's worth, she's probably best known to us Poms as the female vocalist on the theme from 'Sons and Daughters'. What that makes her solo stuff like, one can only imagine.

Her solo LP has a Sly stone cover, think it's Sing a simple Song, Fairly good by my recolection. Bit of a shouter ala the bird from 10 wheel drive, Genya Ravan (prob. the incorrect spelling).

yeah - they have about 6 other LPs, mostly big band covers i.e. Shaft, 2001 etc.. there are some good moments on a couple of them. In some ways they're bit of a novelty as they were sponsored by benson & hedges and the album jackets are layered with their cigarette logo & photos of them performing with big ol signs behind them etc .. by the sounds of it Ed is using the one I gave him to serve beandip

'the exciting' is one of my white whales - not an easy one to track down these days, I do get surprised when I see it popping up amongst the 'weekend finds' of peeps all over the spot (UK & US) so they must have sold a few copies of that one

generally though the DWBB wasn't the cream of the aussie 70s crop for discerning vultures - Dj Sheeps 'ish' listings over at soulstrut are more indicative of the better stuff - Judy Bailey, Bruce Clarke, Brian Brown etc etc

Kerrie Biddell has a solo Lp which I think is called 'just the beginning' - it features a cover of sing a simple song, I see this one around a bit & might start scooping one or two for trades if the price is right/people are interested. She was featured on one or two DWBB LPs as was Marcia Hines..

Sheep &/or Bruce Highway might be along in a bit and have some more to add

Yep, they're australian. "Live at the Cellblock" is also good (reddish cover). If you're patient you can find their LPs on the cheap, as they were popular in their home country. "The Exciting" has at least a US pressing as well and is coveted by "beatheads" for the break that Siah (and others) flipped. Other than that it's hit or miss. Their one with covers of "shaft" and "2001" is especially bland in my opinion.

I've had the biddell with "sing a simple song" on it... quite a scorcher but the rest of the LP is... how do you say it... a "bit naff" I traded it for a kynard LP or something.

                    nice finds john!

i'd agree in regards to the daly wilson lps, the first two are deffo the ones, even 'on tour' has some moments but as for the later stuff... i can't listen to it. i heard a rumour that they gave "In Australia 77" away at concerts, which would explain why you see those shit things everywhere here. as for kerrie biddell, her first self titled lp had 'sing a simple song' on it, the original is on Bootleg and there was a later release on budget label Summit with a different cover. The next lp 'Only the Beginning' has a passable version of Bill Withers 'Harlem' on it with something of a break and a curious version of "Peaches en Regalia" with Kerrie singing the melody. apart from that there's a thing from 79 with a jazz outfit called 'compared to what', it's nothing special, and a forgettable 1 sided 45 with her singing a promo ditty for a local banking institution.

Yes, yes... very nice finds John, I just picked up that Rock & Drums - Free on the weekend also... John Cadman's a sweet find as is all that other stuff! What markets you be hittin' ??

I don't have much to add... On the trade tip, US heads seem to dig the "Too Good For A One Night Stand" joint??? The Exciting is undoubtably the DWBB's best LP... there are a few different pressings also:

The first Australian pressing had a green record label and the cover has a sticker with Kerrie Biddel's name on it. First saw this at Bruce Highway's crib and recently sourced a copy. The pressing seems a little better.

Second Australian pressing has the standard blue Festival label. No sticker on cover. I only turn this one up about once every 4-6 months.

US pressing has imprinted on the front "$3.29" in little design on the right hand corner. Thick cardboard cover, nice clean pressing.

*PLUG* My website "The Tasman Connection" opens finally on this Sunday night, the URL is "http://www.bombhiphop.com/tasman/"

Lots of tasty stuff. 50 Aussie records reviewed (including all DWBB albums), complete audio and cover scans, Aussie 45s spotlight, label discography's, resources, interviews, stacks of wax for trade, and more shit to come!

                      peace.
