Moving house soon and am thinking about proper removal boxes, since it might be a while before I buy the big white Ikea shelves for the records etc - any recs for such boxes? (you know, the ones with handles and lids etc, I'm sure they could be modified to take the weight of records too)

Nick, are you using a removal firm ? If so, the book boxes that they use are ideal for records, and can be stacked maybe 3 high without damaging them.
If not, then the best option for a stackable box, would be those carboard boxes with lids sold via Record Collector magazine (little advert for some place without a website or email, I can dig out a back issue for the details if you want). I've bought the version for 45s and they are pretty study - much more sturdy than they look anyway !
However, they aren't cheap. I paid something like £25 for 5x45 boxes (which hold 150 ish each).Matt Hero

I still have loads of twelve inches in the removal boxes I used the last time I moved. They fit perfectly and they're good and strong. They're called Carnaud Metalbox (if there's any metal in the box it must be layered within the card). I think they cost about 50p from the reoval company.

I really like the Ikea Expedit ones, now they're available in white - they looked awful in brown/brown black.

There's a good 2nd hand vinyl shop in Ipswich (Out Of Time) which had one for storing all their soul sevens in, when I found out what the hell it was, I went round every haberdashery in Norwich until I found one!

The shallow drawer size is just right for 2 rows of 45s.
Just put mine in and got some plywood cut into strips at Homebase and glued onto the drawer/shelves for dividers.
Job's a good 'un !
..now to try to get them in in some kind of order...
