• No sleep nigel

No Sleep Nigel has started a new forum for people interested in discussing the workings of the studio. He has recorded extensively with artists on the UK Hiphop scene (the JB's, London Posse, Blade, Mark B, The Herbaliser, The Creators, Phi Life Cypher, Dj Vadim to name a few) over the last 15 years and this could be a good place to post a question or two about your own studiocraft.

Peace

P.

That looks like it may be a very helpful forum, I like the work that No Sleep Nigel has done in the past, there aren't a lot of people in the UK who specialise in mixing Hip-hop!

I just want to ask what he did.

Did you take your tracks into the studio on disk or whatever and he eq'd and filtered all the parts again. or did he just eq the whole track and set the levels? Or was it bits of both for different tracks.

Looks a wicked forum. The guy is a bit of a legend isnt he!

He is a bit of a legend. Anyone that's grown up listening to lots of UK hip hop will be well familiar with his work. Where's Colin Hero?

Easy semad,

Well I take my MPC/Laptop/Disk to the studio...
Load up my Logic/ProTools arrangement, seperate all the tracks onto their own channels i.e. Kick, snare,Hi-hat,Cymbal,bass,loop,vocal tracks or whatever I'm using.
From there they can have their level set be eq'ed, compressed, gated + set reverbs etc.

I find the greater degree of seperation pre-mix the better the result post, as noise/tuning issues can be dealt with or rogue frequencies reigned in.... I often think my 'home' mixes are nice but I'm always amazed that small issues that I don't even notice at home when dealt with can result in huge improvements in a track.
Often they sound very different but always improved.

Eq'ing a whole track is mastering, We usually try to finish the mix to the highest degree that time permits as mastering houses are expensive & often the mastering engineer does not understand how the music works...I sometimes work with 1/4" tape, many mastering houses balk at the sight of a tape now!

You should ask the man himself that's why he set up the forum after all...

i hope people are interested in using it as it could develop into a powerful resource like this board

Like Rick Holmes said "Pass the information, Spread the Knowledge"

See you there
