• Anybody know what this is?

Sounds like Poets of Rhythm to me, but I only know a couple of their tunes. It's the 2nd one in, after the ambient intro, about 2mins from start.

    Ta.

Eh? The one I'm hearing after the ambient intro is a really, really bad hip hoppy, Shaggy whatever thing. Deffo not a Poets tune, unless this is still the intro... ??

Well, Poets/Quannum/Lyrics Born/Whatever. You like Dante's funk, I like this.

'Lady Don't Tek No' by Latyrx, your highness... I like that track but trawling through that cliched whale speak intro had my teeth on edge.

Oh I see... Well does sound a little Lyrics Bornish in the vocal style, but I don't think it's them... The poets just did the I Changed My Mind track, right?

Ah, I see Rich spotted it...

Have you heard the Psychonauts remix of 'I Changed My Mind' Bill? It relies quite heavily on 'Love, Love, Love, Love, Love' by Wool and is rather good, although I suspect that that combination may make it Nick's idea of what they should be playing to the residents of Guantanamo Bay...

I LOVE the Stereo MC's mix of I Changed My Mind and play it almost every week. I've never heard the Psychonauts Mix, though. What 12 is that on?

BTW, the Latyrx, I've just realised, is based on Prince Charles & The City Beat Band's Fool For Love. A big record back when I was a young shaver.

Also, which Poets of Rhythm stuff is good? I keep meaning to check it out, but always forget.

Is it a 'Psychonauts' or a 'Cherry Stones & Psycho Pab' mix ? Can't remember off the top of my head.

I think it is on both the double 45 issue and on a promo 12. I'm sure can confirm this one way or another.

Its called 'I Changed My Mind (Change My Style Mix)'. Its awesome. Its shit rare too so get scouring ebay or the mo wax section in reckless. There is also a 2*7" release which has spinna, poets and andy votel remixes. All are pretty poor.

I love that 'lady dont tek no' track. Its bumpin. It works a dancefloor really well.

Which poets stuff is good? I couldnt say as all that hotpie and candy stuff is out of my price range. Their lp on ninja tune wasn't that good to be honest.

Just dug it out of the rack to check..... it is MRW114DJ2 (God bless Mo Wax and their multiple promos for every release. So where did all the money go then James ?) - and has the vocal and instrumental versions.

I got confused with the double 45 pack because of the Poets mix

Bill - would you like a copy of Lady Tek No?

With regards the Poets, "Augusta, Georgia" is the best all out funk record by the them followed by "Spooky Grinder". Some of the other stuff on Hotpie & Candy is a bit so-so imho.

Their last album was OK, sort of prog-funk! Personally I preferred the Didiers Sound Spectrum LP.

I quite like "Summer Daze" that came out last year. Lazy and hazy in the sunshine.

They're the best live new funk band I have seen. Great drummer.

All the early Poets stuff is brill. They often used different names and most of it was on Hotpie & Candy, like Sermad said. All that stuff goes for crazy money on the bay nowadays - more than the stuff it was inspired by, some kind of e-bay irony there...

If you can find it, try yo pick up the LP 'Ooh, Ooh Hotpie & Candy Record's Original Raw Soul Vol 1" on Soul City, released 1995. It has all the tracks they did under their various guises. Their Ninja Tune LP is okay, but Whitfield Brothers 'In The Raw' is better. Also, check out the recently released Freedom/Bus People Express by The New Process on Toby's label, Tramp Records - it's basically an unreleased early Poets track. It was widely available until about a month ago, but shouldn't be too hard to track down.

I'm after a copy of Ooh Ooh myself, so if you find one, check if there's another! Also, the second release on Tramp sounds pretty fuckin' great to my ears... I can't find the link right now, sorry.

                            Yes, please Left Hand!

I just downloaded a few Poets tunes and there's one called Too Hot which is right up my street. Another called Fondle Rock, which is nice, but one of those modern-funk-groups-trying-to-sound-like-an-old-funk group that I don't see the point of. But still, a nice tune.

Bill - I will be at Fresh Brillo on Monday so I will being the 12" promo of Lady Tek No with me. I can't listen to the soundclip so I hope Mr Rich Hero has got the right track or its not some obscure remix of the track.

Last few days I've been sorting out my records and that was one I pulled out. I had'nt listen to it for years. Now just need to get rid of DJ H and Steffi.....
