• Lone wolf and cub movies

I just watched the original Lone Wolf & Cub films, later re-edited as the infamous Shogun Assassin for US release - the dvds were borrowed from Serms... Before I get to the real subject of this post, first a sample of the hilarious subtitled script:

Scene: Our hero has just dispatched three seriously nasty dudes. Third dude speaking as he dies from a slice to the neck:

My neck...

...sounds as if it is wailing...

...the wound across the neck...

...that wails like the cold wintry wind.

They call that sound the "whistling of wintry wind."

Love it! I believe the same guy says in the re-edit:

"What an extraorinary technique" before he keels over!

Anyhow, watching these films (well one, my crappy PS2 dvd couldn't handle the first one) allowed me to hear the original score, as I'm only familiar with the Mark Lindsey version of the re-edit. This original score is awesome! One of those East meets West matchups - traditional Eastern chords meets Western psych guitars, fuckin fantastic!

Sermad said that superior quality DVD versions of the the first two Lone Wolf movies are now available , I believe also the third too. Whoever is putting them out needs to be persuaded to release the original scores, maybe via the Pelham and Outfit way: limited official limited dist release, usually through a film enthusiast magazine...

Who composed/ performed the score? It sounds very interesting.

Yo Nick!

Glad you enjoyed the flicks mate. Ive got all 6 on vcd format (waiting on these new dvds) and I can tell you the original OST kicks serious ass. Loads of mad groovy music scattered about the place. Reissuing that...oh boy! Talk about hard work but I'll email the people who did the dvd release and ask who has the music rights. Worth a go anyway!

Nick - you must have recognised that dialogue from the GZA album?

"Your technique is magnificent
When cut across the neck
A sound like wailing winter winds is heard, they say
I'd always hoped to cut someone like that someday
To hear that sound
But to have it happen to my own neck is... ridiculous!"

That's the scene I'm talking about all right, from the Shogun Assassin version. I didn't know he lifted dialogue from the movie as well, just thought it was from the promo only soundtrack. I never got into the Liquid Swords LP, just heard it through a friend's copy a few times way back... All the ninja hip hop shit doesn't do a whole lot for me... I prefer the more cerebral Ultra style nonsense!

So which versions are the superiors? Are they better quality? Or featuring lots of bonus goodies? I'd love to see these fims.

I think both versions are coming out of the UK. I don't have the names of the companies but the packaging on the "better" versions is far superior with better cover art and notes inside. And agreed on the soundtracks, great stuff!

here's the company that makes the (worse) DVDs:
http://www.artsmagic.co.uk/store/erol.html#11404x0&&

picture and sound quality are alright, but the only extra are their own ropey trailers for the other films.

there's a 3 DVD box in HMV for 20 quid of films that 'inspired' Kill Bill - the 3 are:

- Babycart at the River Styx (the 2nd Lone Wolf and Cub)
- Lady Snowblood: Blizzard From The Netherworld
- one of the Zatoichi films, forget which one
(all films from that Artsmagic site)

The artsmagic ones are the inferior print. I am 100% sure the new ones are from the us.

didn't Sonny Chiba do some of the Lone Wolf and Cub shows from the tv series?
