    The art of diggin'

i was thinking: to what extent is diggin' an skill and to what extent is luck?

Are there skills of a good digger like time spent money spent or is even such thing as a good digger. does it just come down to being in the right place at the right time?

Personally, i think that is part skill like knowing what to look for, where to go, what to pay etc. but someone with no clue as to any of these things  could buy that record just on the off chance. it is probably a blance between chance and looking

also do you think the more time spent the more chance of results. it is pretty clear that the greater number of records looked through the greater chance of finding some thing worthwhile. But all the records you look through could be equallly shit as good. resulting in no good records found.

basically, i was wondering what you think consitutes a successful digger

    peace

I think the your definition of a digger is far too linear. There are more than just "good" and "bad" ones. There's also the ones, who get all the big tunes really cheap, the ones that discover some incredible stuff but buys mostly utter shit, the ones that get the price/quality allways right, the ones that want to make a profit, the ones that would rock any party with reocrds scrapped together in 3 minutes at the oxfam round the corner, etc.

My point here is that it really depends on what you're after - how you defined success within digging. Knowledge can take only so far; much has to do with gut feeling and sensitivity for the finer hints of funk in the cover art and such. So if you're after "new tunes" from unexpectable regions and eras (which for me, should be the higher calling of any dedicated digger) you need time, money (min 80% of what you buy is useless and even worse, no one else wants it either) and a mixture between luck and sensitivity.

Too much coffee? no, not me....

I know a guy who just has 'the nose'. Always comes back with amazing things. How he does it, I don't know... Anyhow, that's what I call it - the nose.

an open mind and a good memory are two key factors here.
thinking outside the box (pardon the pun) and a genuine passion for ALL forms of alternative art, cinema, music and theatre has certainly helped out some of the best "diggers" ive ever met.

given the option would you rather
          a)smoke weed,
          b)play computer games,
          c)chase women
          or
          d)look for music??????

I was looking for some info on the whereabouts of a boot sale last weekend and I ended up on a dogging website. Apparently the location of the said boot sale is also a hot dogging spot which means you can dig in the morning and dog in the evening.

That's c) and d) covered in one location. Just take some weed and a gameboy and you've got all bases covered and a splendid day out.

Do you think anyone here actually believes that?!

What were you on? www.collymore.co.uk or some such nonsense?

Then again, 'car-booting' is probably 'scene' jargon by now. You'd best check www.urbandictionary.com and make sure so that you can avoid such mix-ups in future.

The term 'teabagging' always makes me chuckle.
