• Slovakian bits!

Anyone been digging in slovakia at all? Got a friend there right now and he's looking for any places to go or records to grab.

Was there a slovakia state label? My memory is failing me right now!

cheers.

Supraphon was the main Czechoslovakian label, and lots of rather nice classical records are on it. there's also Esta and Ultraphon but i can't remember it they're related

I have been playing tracks on the show by a couple
of excellent Slovakian bands over the summer, namely
Some Other Place and a band called simply the letter C.
They are both on a fine label called Free Dimension
The music is a bit spacey and kinda Pixies style rock
but very fine and the album by C called Universum is one
of my fave albums of 04.
C and a band called Deverova Chyba are coming to the
UK for a tour in October and are playing their first date
in Milton Keynes, partly on the strength of me caning their
album so much! If there are more bands as good as the
ones on Free Dimension then the rock scene over there
is pretty healthy.

I'm after stuff by the Czech state radio & TV ensembles, actually - not necessarily funk, too, so if anyone can help.....

Yes, but I'd imagine that both halves of the former Czecheslovakia (Czeck Republic & Slovakia) would be full of the same sorts of records.

May I add The Flamingo Band to the list of goodies on Supraphon.

Panton's another Czechoslovakian label - the only thing I've found on it is an LP by pianist Jiri Malasek, nothing funky but the potential was there!

Energit's first Lp is imho the very-best in a long line of killer Lps on Supraphon (state owned)
