• B boy jams

Somehow (dont ask) I might be djing at a b boy throwdown in a month or so.

Now I've never ever played to breakers before and I know there are some top rockers out there who might be able to suggest some gems.

I'll start with apache and the mexican.

Ive got quite a few strictly b-boy breaks records - basically apache looped up with monster beats underneath it. But I wouldn't mind some funky jams in there too...

Esther Williams 'Last Night Changed It all'
James Brown 'Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose' (Live At The Apollo Version'

Badder Than Evil 'Hot Wheels'
Ray Bryant 'Up Above The Rock'

Basically, just dig out all your UBB's.

2 copies of 'Catch a Groove' by Juice is all you need!

or there's that Grandmaster Flash 'Apache' 12 which came out as a promo - he cuts up two copies and turns it into a 10 min break.

ThereÂ’s a difficulty balance to strike as no matter how good the classics are (apache/give it up/Mexican/etc.) most bboys will tell you that they are now bored of hearing these in the circles.
I tend to prefer some ‘fast-rap’ these days as there’s just so much to choose from, the tempos are high and they are usually based around the classics anyway.
I guess you have some good library shit that you could drop too.
Take a few copies of the UBBÂ’s as a backup.

I sold them all!

I still have those 'the break's comps that came out on strut. the dj pogo and cutmaster swift ones.

my doubling is utter crap. I'll start by juggling funky nassau. hehe.

Quite an obvious one but Jimmy Castor Bunch "It's Just Begun" would work, or is this too obvious?
I'm just an addict, addicted to music, maybe it's a habit, I gotta use it

Edan’s ‘Fast Rap’ CD is representative of the sound I think works in bboy circles, so yeah just burn a copy press play and pretend to DJ.

I think the key to a good bboy set is play a couple of classics (its just begun/give it up/the Mexican etc), a few fast rap 12”s with a couple of more obscure funk/break records thrown into the mix.

I think some old school UK hip hop would work well, Iv played a couple of Kold Sweat releases before some of the beats are hype as hell shame the rapping was so poor.
