  • What are you spinning?

I've been spinning a different mix than my normal 45 only format as of late. I normally pass up the LPs, but have come to realize that I have been missing out. Here is what I have been driving the wife nuts with:

Howlin' Wolf - Evil & Little Red Rooster (from The Howlin' Wolf Album LP)
Usually not a huge guitar fan, but love it here.

David Newman - The Thirteenth Floor (Bigger & Better LP)
The flute is amazing & Purdie's drumming just right on.

Mongo Santamaria - Crazy Lady (Fuego LP)
Monster tune - and the wife actually likes it!

Blue Mitchell - Granite & Concrete (Blue's Blues LP)
9.51 minutes of brilliance. Anything else by him as good as this?? I love the Collision In Black 45 on Blue Note, but this is something entirely different.

Kool & The Gang - Ronnie's Groove (Live at PJ's LP)
    Party funk at it's best.

Bobby Williams - Funky Superfly (MTVH) 45

Mongo Santamaria - I Can't Get Next to You (Atlantic) 45
How did Mongo do these heavy covers? Nice....

    The Kats - Under the Covers (E & C) 45
    Quirky funk 45.

I'm sure there's others, but I off to bed.

So what is everyone else spinning?

Blue Mitchell's COLLISION IN BLACK album is pretty good all the way through as I recall, so you might wanna track it down to accompany your 45. And if you like that album, check out Monk Higgins' MACARTHUR PARK LP. Monk's composition "Jo Ju Ja" is on both albums, and the two LPs share a similar dark, funky, late 60s jazz-with-beats vibe.

Here's some records I played when Miss Shingaling & Guy Hennigan guested at my night in Durham, NC on 8/26/04:

    SET 1
Jimmy McGriff: Back on the Track - LP
King Floyd: Times Have Changed - LP
Murray McKay: Don't Let the Pusher Push You - 45
    James Brown: Devil's Hideaway - 45
    The Chords: Hush - 45
Jimmy McCracklin: Believe Me - 45
The Naked Truth: The Shing-A-Ling Thing - 45
Pieces of Eight: Strange Things Are Happening - 45
Rhetta Hughes: Gimme Some of Yours - 45
Carolyn Franklin: I Can't Love Without You - LP
Screaming Lord Sutch: Thumping Beat - LP
Cozy Powell: And Then There Was Skin - 45
George Campbell: Double Bump (part 1) - 45
Sunrise Movement: Clockwise Revolution - 45
Sergio Mendes & Brazil 77: Superstition - LP

    SET 2
Lulu: Try to Understand - LP
Art Heatlie: Soul Sanction - LP
Leon Haywood: Clean Up Your Own Backyard - 45
Communicators & Black Experience Band: The Road - 45
The Eliminators: Give It Up - 45
    Shirlean Williams & The Tempo's Band: This Is A Song - 45
Frankie Y Los Matadores: Todo Se Acabo - LP
Larry Harlow: That Groovy Shingaling - 45
Jo Ann King: Hey Lancelot - 45
Reggie Milner: Soul Machine - 45

    SET 3
Candi Staton: I'd Rather Be An Old Man's Sweetheart
    Than A Young Man's Fool - 45
Douglas Westlund & Kjell Öhman: The Snake - LP
Rhetta Hughes: You're Doing It With Her - 45
Kati Kovacs: Milyen Ijedös Làny - LP
    Delfonics: Hey Love - LP
Eddie Holman: I Love You - LP
The Stylistics: Stop, Look, Listen - LP
    The Continental 4: How Can I Pretend - 45
Ray Terrace: Wade in the Water - LP
Johnny Zamot: Boogaloo Frog - 45
Willie Bobo: Shingaling Baby - 45

    SET 4
Flamingo Group: Chain of Fools - LP
    All Star: Endust (part 1) - 45

Both Guy & Kym were great fun to hang out with on the three days they were here. I know close to nothing about Northern soul, but Guy's 45s were quite impressive nonetheless, both in terms of rarity and just plain good music. We have absolutely no northern scene here in NC, but several people complimented Guy on his selections nevertheless so I was happy they made it out.

Are you guys really tall or is Miss Doodah wee? It really looks like the picture I insisted was taken of me (5' 4" in platform socks) and Pete DJ Jones (6' 8&quot. It's hilarious. I look like his mascot. Or pet.
