  • Hf&s thurs oct 28: guest dj martin lawrie

Thursday Oct 28, DJs, Nick.C & guest: Martin Lawrie (The Cool Off, Leicester / Soulgeneration.co.uk)
Hot, Funky & Sweaty. Every Thursday at The Salmon & Compass, 58 Penton St (cnr of Penton & Chapel Mkt), Angel, London N1. 8pm-2am. £2/£3 with bands, free before 9pm. Info: 020 7837 3891.

Our guest DJ tonight is of one of those guys dedicated to spreading the word of real soul and funk – in other words, he’s one of us!

MartinÂ’s pet project, Soul Generation.co.uk, is a fountain of knowledge on the often elusive subject of soul, with tons of lovely sound clips and label scans. His club night, The Cool Off in Leicester, is a beacon of quality 45 action oop North. We had his DJ partner, Dylan Czabuinik, down a few months back and he was bloody ace too!

This’ll be the first time for over two years that Martin has played in London – I guess he’s been too busy DJing with Kid Acne and the whole Leicester thing – so there’ll be a fair few old fans of his making the trip this week, why don’t y’all join them?!

    HereÂ’s a taste from MartinÂ’s box:

    Saxie Russell 'El Monkey' RAN-DEE
Wooden Glass 'Monkey Hips And Rice' Interim
Little Mary Staten 'Steppin' Stone' GME
Jan and Eddie 'Funky Ride' C/UP
David Robinson 'I'm A Carpenter' Orbitone
    Lewis Clark 'Green Power' Fuller
Eddie Bo 'We're Doin' It' Bo Sound
Ernie And The Top Notes, Inc 'Dap Walk' Fordom
Bobby Williams Group 'Boogaloo Mardi Gras Pt. 2' Seven B
Vester 'You Got The Power' Blake
Sextette Unlimited 'Boot That Thing' Gerrie
Gene Anderson 'The Loneliest One' Royal Tone
Pat Brown 'The Good Got To Suffer For The Bad' Seven B
Bonnie Blanchard 'YouÂ’re The Only One' CRS
Cookie Scott 'I DonÂ’t Care' ORR
