  • Masai "across the tracks" - overrated. . .

So I get home and unwrap my decent, relatively cheap copy of "Across The Tracks" by the Masai and put it on the turntable.

Hmmmmmm. WHY is this rated so highly ? Doesn't seem at all exceptional to me - just another generic "James Brown Production". JB is great, but why is this considered such a killer rarity, when it's musically on a par with much of the JB's stuff ? (And not quite as catchy as "Funky Watergate", either). Personally I think this is one for completists.

Surely there are more unique and unusual records than this to covet and scour the planet for.

It's on Contempo right? That's a UK label? Anyway, it's actually The Believers and the tune was originally released on Brownstone. The reason why it might fetch so much is that it might be a boot release. From what I've read, Contempo might not have had the permission to release the tune, hence the name change.

I thought you weren't buying any records from me since I hurled a few OTT expletives in your direction John.

And I promise to throw in a few harrumps with the hmmmmms for variety this week!

Yes, you can add me the list of people who want that record a lot, but aren't prepared to pay big ££ for it. I'll take it away from you if you don't like it. I don't think its overrated; overpriced maybe, but its definitely a good record. I think the brownstone issue was orange promo only, thats why its such big money (?). Strangely enough, it had a Nigerian release too, on Decca, as the Masai.
