Can anyone recommend any movies, or shorts or documentaries relating to DJ culture or dance music?
This is the deal: We're doing another edition of Last Night A DJ Saved My Life, which is coming out in 2006, the centenary of the DJ. In conjunction with this, we're trying to sort out a weekend/week of programmed material at an artsy London establishment (they've already expressed interest in the idea), which will include parties, possible photography exhibitions and also screenings of old programmes/movies/docs.
I know about the obvious ones:
This Is England: Wigan Casino
Alan Yentob's Hip Hop doc (the 1984 one, not the recent, crap, one)
Scratch
Freshest Kids
Paris Is Burning
Pump Up The Volume (1st episode is passable)
The Hip Hop Years (ditto)
(There was a rash of pretty crap ones a few years ago, like Modulations, but I'm not sure if anyone should be made to sit through those again....)
Any others you can suggest or would like to see? Also, we're thinking of trying to edit together a bunch of short stuff into one doc, such as Greg wilson's appearance on the Tube in 1983 demonstrating mixing. Any other memorable incidents you can think of?
