Can anyone recommend any movies, or shorts or documentaries relating to DJ culture or dance music?

This is the deal: We're doing another edition of Last Night A DJ Saved My Life, which is coming out in 2006, the centenary of the DJ. In conjunction with this, we're trying to sort out a weekend/week of programmed material at an artsy London establishment (they've already expressed interest in the idea), which will include parties, possible photography exhibitions and also screenings of old programmes/movies/docs.

I know about the obvious ones:
    This Is England: Wigan Casino
Alan Yentob's Hip Hop doc (the 1984 one, not the recent, crap, one)
    Scratch
    Freshest Kids
    Paris Is Burning
Pump Up The Volume (1st episode is passable)
    The Hip Hop Years (ditto)

(There was a rash of pretty crap ones a few years ago, like Modulations, but I'm not sure if anyone should be made to sit through those again....)

Any others you can suggest or would like to see? Also, we're thinking of trying to edit together a bunch of short stuff into one doc, such as Greg wilson's appearance on the Tube in 1983 demonstrating mixing. Any other memorable incidents you can think of?

        Sounds great LBG.

Are you looking for just films about Dj'ing in its various forms or more general, dance music related film/docs?

There's a Japanese film called 'Scratching the Surface', about hiphop in Japan, which has something to do with the rarekind crew. click ere

We are currantly trying to put together a hiphop film based festival at the cube in Bristol. Which is scheduled for around april. But its just in the research stages at the moement.
Maybe we could do some kind of colaboration?

How about Cut Chemist & DJ Shadow - Product Placement DVD?
Wildstyle... main emphasis on graf but features the DJ heavily as the backbone of Hip Hop.

Hopefully will be putting on Style Wars, possibly with exhibition, though some of the touring pieces are 8ft square ! There's info at . . . http://www.stylewars.com . . .

( Wildstyle has actually been shown there before, but about 5 years ago )

Deep Crates would be worth checking out. I met the guy responsible for it when I was in Toronto earlier this year, sounds like a great doc. Featuring interviews with Diamond D, Lord Finesse, DJ Format, Beni B, Soulman, Peanut Butter Wolf, Egon, Mr. Walt, Evil D., Buckwild etc.

Dunno if thats the sort of thing for you Bill, but for Marc's Bristol event it may be more suitable?

Yeah, but I think Bill was after interesting takes on dance music/culture...

I was involved in that at one point. Always the same questions, always asked by a total... well. Very tedious, though the Cut Chemist one is okay, purely because Egon was asking the questions instead of the usual host tedium.

Bill, have you heard of a short film about beat digging by Jesper Jensen, called er, "Beat Diggin", I dunno if this is the same movie United States of Audio is talking about.

There's a piece about it in Big Daddy 10, with contact addresses. I can PM them over to you if you like.

I've talked to beatdawg about showing his movie (crate diggin)
but I've also heard its kinda boring.

I have a copy of Jesper's movie which is cool, although it does lack the 'stars' of beat diggin.
He also has another movie, 'who's next' about up and coming mc's in NY, which we will also being showing at the festival.

                            Mr. H.
i was too busy(lazy) to make to the agm, maybe another time.
