  • gonna change HF&S name, any ideas?

I was intially against renaming the Hot, Funky & Sweaty nights, especially with the LP coming up etc, but the name is acually putting people off going, especially women because I guess they're taking the meaning literally!

Artwork is going for the LP very soon and the nights start up again this Thursday, so I need to find a new name fast, and as luck should have it, I'm dead busy with other stuff too.

So this is a general request for any suggestions as to what to call a weekly night, playing decent quality Soul, Funk & R&B with a traidition of regular live bands. Something that will sound good as the name of a compilation of this kind of music played by bands today.

I wouldn't mind going a little more 'grown up' and not mentioning funk in the title maybe, or say soul instead. Naming it after a track is always nice, I'm open to that.

But please, keep it serious. I just don't have the time to joke around with this. I've accepted Chris's argument that the name is doing more harm than good, so now it's just a question of changing it and changing it fast!

    Thanks.

I'm amazed that the name is putting people off... but anyway, I'll have a run thro' some reckids tonight and see if anything makes the grade...
If you're looking for a pristine copy then this isn't the one for you. The vinyl looks like someone has polished their brickwork with it and the label has been ruined by some fool with a pen.

To be honest, if you really want people through the door you may have to keep the words funk, soul and R&B off any flyer or poster!

          'It's Your Thing'
'The Nitty Gritty' (to plagiarise Cheebs ).
          'Ride Your Pony'

(And I'll leave 'Club June Sarpong' out of it then... ).

Good point, but I'm not interested in trying to fool people into coming! There are people, good people out there who know that funk and soul doesn't end in Barry White's hankies or a platform shoe. Plus it has to work with an LP title too.

I'm thinking something like Funky Thing or Soul & Sunshine (fryer's suggestion, though it may not work as well for an LP) Haven't really hit the brainstorming activity yet...

Thanks for the help so far, seriously appreciate it.

Not too sure about it (not that I can suggest anything better, mind).

'New Generation'. The track typifies the sound of the night and the LP showcases the 'new generation' of funk. Geddit? Do ya???

Interesting... Of course Soul Generation would be perfect, but alas, Martin Lawrie has dibs on that one!

Went through the itunes for some inspiration, any of these get a reaction? I should try to remember exactly who I'm trying to appeal to: open minded ears, not necceasrily automatic soul/funk fans, just people who know good shit when they hear it.

                      What it is

                      Soul & sunshine
                      Funky thing
                      Soul sugar
                      Do that thing
                      Boss action
                      Heavy soul
                      Hit me with that
                      Hung up
                      Jump Back
                      Rhythm message
                      Running wild
                      Salt popcorn
                      Sneakin up on you
                      Soulful illusion
                      Soul freedom
                      Soul pusher
                      Soulin’
                      Soulin’ back
                      Stone soul
                      Tear it up
                      The drop
                      There was a time
                      Twitchie feet
                      Work it out
                      You got it

I think that I prefer Sunshine & Soul, or maybe even Sunshine Soul.

Looking at your list, (Do That) Funky Soul Sugar is the best combination of titles that I can come up with.
                        Don't call it a comeback... H, N, and the number 7.
                        Ok, it's a bit of a comeback, I suppose...

I think I'm gonna be going with Soulin' I like the feel of it, has a sort of "soul, but old soul" connotation to it, I feel.
