being a clueless luddite, I don't know where to look for a free MP3 player, that will let me record sound as mp3s. Could I ask a kindly soul to point me at one please?

Is this for a CD swap type thing, Fin? If you're looking to dump onto CD, then just burn the music files as Aiffs. You only really need to use mp3s for sending over the Internet or for looking like a prize twat with yer fancy ipod whatever.

Or did you know that already? The luddite tone of your post suggested otherwise...

            Don't call it a comeback... H, N, and the number 7.
            Ok, it's a bit of a comeback, I suppose...

Most CD ripping software will also convert stuff to MP3 -Cdex (http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/) is good and fairly configurable

I just need to be able to put a record into my computer (which I can do, since I do sort of understand wires) and have it be recorded as an MP3, or change all my wave files to MP3, in a very simple way.

iTunes will convert waves to mp3, and is free from the apple site ...

Second that. I've also used it quite happily for a while - though not for the MP3 funcion.
