  • Jazz Britannia

Bored friday night in and bam bbc4 comes up trumps.

Cracking documentary about the birth of british jazz. Myself coming from an jazz fusion background - it was great to see the roots of the british movemnt and all the archive footage.

Wow - The footage of tubby hayes was superb -At 17 you've got john dankworth (in hawaiian shirt and straw hat!) saying he's the best sax player in the uk. Fine stuff.

Part 2 next week (jazz rock/fusion) - 3 the week after (80's revival).

You just wish it could have been longer!

    Typical scenario:

    A) I set video to tape this

    B) Video didn't tape it

    C) I am very p*ssed off

Does anyone know if it's repeated?

What that article said about the show just starting in the 40's and missing out some real pioneers was totally bang on.

I thought it was a bit strange at the time but I think maybe it was down to having a limited time/budget and also focusing on what I spose was the start of a real jazz 'scene' was a good jump off.

Just thought I'd bump this back to the top as the series gets its terrestrial repeat starting tomorrow night - BBC2, 11.35pm.

                      Good bump fella!

Brillo boys will have to set their video recorders...

If you're looking for a pristine copy then this isn't the one for you. The vinyl looks like someone has polished their brickwork with it and the label has been ruined by some fool with a pen.

                        Jazz Brittania

the uk 60's one was one of the finest bits of television i have ever seen [ apart from silly keith tippets !!] i will be tuning again..thanks guys..

just had my enthusiasm fired by a great batch of deram cd's from vocalion, alan skidmore, mike westbrook, michael garrick, henry lowther and john cameron..the flytipper house is banging to the sounds of uk jazz this morning!

i also bought the 'amicus' dvd box recently which contains the movie ' dr.terrors house of horrors' worth it for the footage of roy castle with tubby hayes alone!

and why was john dankworth so bloody cool?

a cross [ in looks ] between chet baker [ pre-drugs and jumping from windows] james dean and james bond, not timothy dalton though...

all that talent and a fine line in zoot suits too..it just ain't fair !
