  • F*****d up drum'n'bass

A genre I was a bit intrigued by when it appeared 10-15 years ago or whenever it was. Listened a bit to some stuff online and review CDs I was sent for a 'zine but never got around to really exploring it. This is something that is like a noiser and more avantgarde d'n'b I guess. Now I can only think of Venetian Snares - but there were others in a similar vein I liked. Anyone have more recommendations?

    Examples:

"Only one thought left, that makes me come alive,
and that is you and me side by side, on the licorice ride"

Not sure if it's fudged up enough for you but I used to really like Plug:

Aphex Twin - Come to Daddy

Quite a terrifying video, not suitable for small children IMHO.

Good call Mr B... The first two Plug 12"s are great, proper looney tunes...
If you're looking for a pristine copy then this isn't the one for you. The vinyl looks like someone has polished their brickwork with it and the label has been ruined by some fool with a pen.

For starters, Four Hero 'Paralell Universe' is pretty crazy, much more of a soul vibe though compared to Mr Vberts stuff.
Tony Thorpe and his Endemic Void project made some seriously strange trippy and melancholic stuff, although Venetian Snares is more 'Breakcore' in that he uses a tracker programme for the assembly of his beats rather than the old school method of large/multiple hardware samplers tied to a sequencer. However it's all about the person rather than the equipment!
The early Omni Trio stuff on Moving Shadow is pretty mad as well, more of a 'rave' vibe
Of the new bunch, check Rockwell whose music is strange, dark and distinctly old school in feel.
I know there's a load more, need to check my vinyl.......

Yeah, I got all the fun twice as I was in London when a lot of the Omni Trio etc stuff first came out, then I moved to Japan and 6 months later it all hit these shores.

Heh, two bites of the cherry eh?
I'm going to do some charts in the review forum about various strands of UK club culture over the years and the records therein. Including Drum And Bass, not sure which sub section to go for, Intelligent, Rollers, Ragga/Jungle, Dark etc etc.
I think I'll be doing an Italian Piano House top ten first though. The kind of records that the likes of Farley and Weatherall used to play at clubs like Phuture, Spectrum, Shoom and loads of other Boys Own affiliated
clubs like Yellow Book in covent garden. And not forgetting the major Northern clubs like Hacienda.
Now I just need to get my arse in gear and get it done!

Wonder if enough folk would be up for a D'n'B swap? The House one seemed to go down well ...
                          Paging Viva Chiba ...

Unfortunately I don't have any of that stuff on vinyl any more.

                            !

Well, I have some of the wax at least - I've retained about a crate and a half of oldskool / d & b 12".

Sadly don't seem to come across it here as much as in my former Sarf Laandun hunting grounds though.

I'd be up for that. Finally make some use of the pile of the dnb 12"s that sit on the bottom shelf
Edit: sadly no smooth mixing available...
