  • What's good on myrrh, light and key records.

    Hello folks,

There has been a gradual trickle of god-bothering vinyl into my local chazzas over the last year or so, mainly on the myrrh, light and key labels. Occasionally I take the plunge and usually come out disappointed. The two exceptions have been Choralana (which prompted Matt Hero to announce that these holy Swedes had delivered the goods more than once) and Joshua, a sort of bible bashing garage-psych Crosby Stills & Nash (apparently they made one album, then disappeared into the desert to pray).

I have Johnny Trunk's Ressurection compilation as a starting point into the world of God vinyl, and I picked up Golden Avatar ages ago after it was mentioned here. No sign of Hymns a Swinging though. (But I do have Hymns Tijuana style!?!?!)

Does anyone know of any other names to look out for, especially on the myrrh, light and key labels?
    It ain't shakey

judy mackenzie "judy" is good on key (the 2 best tracks are on the resurrection comp), names escape me now but i think there's a few good bits of psych on key as well, so if it's all cheap i'd take a punt on it if i were you....new hope "godofallofus" (as heard on sermad's psych micks2) is on light and is amazing...

lots of stuff on Light is worth checking. buy anything cheap. again like Key, there's some psych and soft psych/folk/jazz on Light which is very good, rare and goes for money. on myrrh there's a couple of LPs by a band called 'sheep' or summat like that which are worth buying for trades or ebay - they're nice enough and go for a few quid.

The Out of Darkness LP on Key is well expensive and apparanly rather good but that's just hearsay I admit.

I think I paid £20 for mine a few years ago.

The Out of Darkness album is the Xian holy grail I guess. £300 for a minty copy although the book price is half that. Like Lee I've not heard it but there's a slighty easier to find live album on Key with Out Of Darkness performing a couple of tracks. One's ace. The other has Juith Durham on vocals and sucks rather large plums. There's also a Key sampler with and Out Of Darkness track but I've not yet found it.

I have a few cool religeous records. I'll post the details later. I have a horrendous hangover at the minute and wish not to leave my chair.

I've got a record on Myrrh called "Jesus Is..." which is okay - a bit like Hair in places, a bit like war of the worlds in others. There's one beat-y kind of track on it called Prune Stones which is pretty good.

I picked up a couple on Dovetail recently :

11.59 'This the sacrifice of our praise' which is lovely psychy folk
                  Lois Buckley which isn't.

Narnia ('Aslan is not a tame lion') on Dove is pretty good as I recall - I sold mine years ago and maybe I shouldn't have. Ditto Out of Darkness which I've had before and traded on.
We know when a mate buys it for you too.

The All Saved Freak Band - My Poor Generation would be my tip to search for though it's a US release and not common - great psych baroque stuff. They also did a Christian Lord of the Rings thing which i can't for the life of me remember.

For those into S American psych garage seek out Generacion De Jesus these guys never got past track three in on their copy of Nuggets.

The Valley of Achor - A Door of Hope on Dovetail is nice psychy folk in an 11.59 mould

New Spirit Singers 'Godofallofus' on Light is well worth picking up. Its really, really weird, and the title track is a monster, heavy drums throughout, slightly psyched-out, sounds like dj shadow record with some god-fearing rednecks intoning 'he is the god of all of us' over the top.

Our Front Porch - Now Sounds of the 70s (Light)
: Kinda hippy rockish at times. Vocals are very white choir-y but sounds good. Mixed band of Black, White, and Chinese. "The Flower Shoppe" is quite funky with ballad-y moments inbetween the uptempo feel. "Trust Me Now" is the gem for me though. Really nice psychadelic guitars with a haunting female vocal bit.

                              Son Light - s/t (Light)
: Four man band. Really good musicians with an excellent drummer. Id pretty much call this funky Country Christian Rock. Kind of odd at moments but a good listen all the way through. "Truth of Salvation" has a really funky Jazz Rock breakdown in the middle of the song where the electric guitar goes wild... very funky. My favorite is the lowriding laid back Funk cut "Walk in the Spirit"... very worth copping.

The McCrary - Sunshine Day (Light)
: Family band. Pretty much a happy Gospel piece. Uptempo bits and ballads. Nice record overall. Only stand out track would be "Jesus People" with its headnodder of a beat. Family is stretching out "Jeeeeeesssssuuus we believed you..." Bass guitar is damn funky. Make you wanna go preach the Lords word...

The Beautiful Zion Choir feat. Emma Richards - In the Spirit (Myrrh)
: Now Im a big Gospel fan but most of the Choirs I get I cant get into... get it? However this is a really nice uptempo Soul Choir. Lead by Emma Richards she can get you up out your seat and clappin your hands with Jesus. Mostly all the tracks are funky and soulful. Best track is "Jesus (Put It On Jesus)" which is a great funky Holy Roller type joint. Perfect music to do the Electric Slide to... if you like doing that kind of thing...
