This version sounds like the same as Dibango's. Did they used his version on their Paul Winley record?

As far as I'm aware, the Mighty Tomcats are an entirely different band and did a note for note cover of the Dibango nugget.

From memory, cause it's long time since I've heard the Tomcats version, the Dibango OG has more chanting in it, but I'm not sure.

Also isn't the Tomcats version longer too?

Definitely different recordings - although the Tom Cats isn't a very different version than Manu's.

In fact most covers of Makossa that I've heard do not really stray from the OG very much.

I like the Jabowlski or whatever it's called, it's downstairs and I can't be bothered to look! But that one... the vocally version...

While Winley did a lot of very weasely shit the Mighty Tom Cats were an actualy band as far as I know. Soul Makossa appears on their LP (also been re-issued) and on a 45 (the version that I have), and has been already mentioned, the version of S.M. that I have all pretty much stick to the original arrangement. Woo hoo, 3 posts in one day to VV. I'm on a roll!

What version would you say does stray the most?
How about Mandingo's The Headhunter? (that is the right title isn't it? Again, upstairs - this time too hungover to look)

What about Brent Dowe's? I love this and if anyone's got a spare for trade or sale, please let me know!

I haven't got a spare, but its on "20 Explosive Reggae Hits" on Trojan which should be considerably easier to find than the 7".

Also check out Byron Lee's "Reggae Fever" LP for a different take on "Reggae Makossa" .
