Can anyone pull last year's thread out of the archive (and the year-before-that's, etc.)? I'm curious* to see how long the press has been printing this same story. It reminds me of the annual GSCE and A-level pass-rate stories, until this year anyway. Good news for Julian and John and those of you making records of course, so that's something.

It's only jade-inducing for record fans though, innit, who might notice it year after year. For people with less interest in records, *if* they see it's annual arrival, they'd be like, oh that's odd and might make a remark to their teenage kids about it. Couldn't agree more with the main point. I don't suppose there is any more 'news' these days than there ever was. First they invented the concept of 'news'. And then the concept of '24 hour news'. I've rewritten a couple of feature articles I've delivered upon their anniversaries - which substantiates the suspicion that these 'events' are cynically manufactured on a seasonal basis. Most of it tied in with advertising revenues etc, I suspect. Either that, or my editor really couldn't be bothered.

I can't wait until it gets a little chillier, and the Daily Mail and their odious chill-mongering ilk hit us with the ARCTIC SUB ZERO MURDER DEATH BLAST headlines. Bring it.

The other irritating ubiquity in online 'journalism' which I currently despise is the prevalance of '10 best' '10 must see' or 10 '[insert any old superlative]' lists. Why. Bother?
