With a heavy heart I thought it might be some kind of sick prank at first but Rolling Stone wouldn't have
published the news without thorough investigation first I'm sure.

'Transformer' 'Berlin' all the VU stuff...

Cheers for the music Lou. RIP.

Love him or not, there's no denying the far reaching influence Lou had on music. So much can be traced back directly or indirectly to him. Feels like one of the big ones has left the building.

And that contribution was nothing like constructive criticism. Thanks.

VU were a big part of my formative years and for that, whatever his faults (and they were numerous) I loved the man. Sad day.

Not the first thing you've not got either.
Though for once you had the brains to apologise.

Very sad news. No Reed, no Velvet Underground, no (fill in pretty much any band ever)...

A pity his last release was an album I really didn't like.

                          RIP.

Aye, you´re much better off with wholesome stuff by Coltrane, Miles, Billie Holiday, Sonny Stitt, Esther Phillips, Grant Green, Lee Morgan etc.

I like a lot of the VU stuff, but I agree that Reed, whether he intended to or not, probably added to the rock and roll romanticism of heroin that carried on through Cobain to Doherty and even Amy Winehouse. Still, Heroin and Waiting For The Man are much better, more realistic songs than Just Say No by The Cast of Grange Hill
                            Vardy.....¡¡¡PELIGRO!!!

Ray Charles, Etta James, Gil Scott Heron, O.V Wright, Marvin Gaye...

I never thought the VU made heroin sound glamorous - 'Waiting For The Man' is really scuzzy and, if nothing else, I hate people who can't keep appointments.

Son of Stan's opinion is, as ever, incendiary, but then it is intended to be. Is Lou Reed's influence entirely on white rock music, I wonder?

What I can't stand is the BBC printing tribute tweets from Ricky Gervais and Mia Farrow ('who also started her career in the 60's') and calling it journalism.
