  • Ron Everett - the $2800 bootleg LP

I thought it in the public interest to point out that this LP is a bootleg made recently by Emanuele Pinotti, eBay name plastenko:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ron-Everett-...vip=true&rt=nc

It won't come as much surprise to many of you because he's already notorious for doing bootlegs on his Sagittarius A-Star label, but what is notable in this instance is that he deliberately tried to pass it off as an original for big bucks and continues to deny any wrongdoing.

However, I can show 1) it's a recent, European boot and 2) that he is responsible for making it. Not only that but he put it on eBay full in the knowledge that he would rip someone off for big money.

Don't support conmen like Emanuele Pinotti. Sooner or later either myself or someone else will put this album out properly. It only ever got to a Test Pressing stage, and it deserves a proper release.

The sound-clips that he has used belong to a friend of mine in Philly.
If you're looking for a pristine copy then this isn't the one for you. The vinyl looks like someone has polished their brickwork with it and the label has been ruined by some fool with a pen.

The Pinotti guy put up a fight, he is a liar and a cheat, not a nice fellow at all, but yes I got my money back, ebay policies might be harsh on sellers sometimes, but for buyers they are hard to beat.

I've probably been naïve but this is the first time I've heard Sagittarius A-Star is a bootleg label. Did a quick google and nothing came up but I'm guessing you've got a reason for saying it? Well, at least my wants list just shrank a bit... A crappy situation thoughI'm glad you managed to get your cash back.

Maybe its downbeat with depressing themes and technically imperfect vocals but it is an excellent example of a downbeat mix with depressing themes and technically imperfect vocals

It's his living, and we benefit from it.

Yes, $2800 for an LP. Plus postage. Plus import duties. Lot of money, but in the grand scheme of things and at the level Gerald works at, this represents a good price for a master (had the LP been genuine), from which you can make a very fine repress, which as Shere khan has pointed out, we all benefit from. One quick look at sold vinyl items on ebay and $3000 is regularly surpassed, and if you spend wisely on rare vinyl at that fincial level it can reap dividends. If you're lucky enough to have £3k sitting about at the moment, stick it in an ISA and get a shit 1.5% return (that's a whopping £45 in one year). But something like the first Led Zep LP in mint condition with the correct matrix and all the other bits collectors want and watch it climb in value by about 20% in the next 12 months. Last year that LP was about £2K. This year one sold for £7K. Mental. But surely it's so much better than sticking it in the bank. Of course you can go wrong and buy LPs that go down in price, but stick to the super rare classic LPs and the top ten collectable artists and I imagine you rarely go wrong.

He's sold some high ticket items in his time. Are they all fake, do you think? He's also got some decent feedback - so, are they 'good' bootlegs, i.e. it takes a very discerning eye, or are lots of buyers easily pleased / don't know what they're doing? He's certainly made a few quid out of it.
