  • Horace Silver

It´s been a rough year. I needed some of that healing feeling, went onto Youtube to watch Horace play. then I saw the RIPs in the comments.

My favourite kind of musician, generous, good-humoured, sparklingly talented, tough and lyrical. Thanks, Horace.

Apparently, Horace is still alive! Which is great - but, either way, THANKS, HORACE!

Sorry for the false alarm. I saw reports on Spanish and European media before posting here, but apparently his son Gregory reports that he is "alive and eating breakfast and having coffee."

        Swing on. Horace

              Indeed.

I love Horace Silver - saw him live twice at Ronnie Scotts back in the 1980s - at one of those gigs - there was an excellent vocal version of "the Cape Verdean blues" re-titled "samba carribean" - I waited around till the end of the second set and shook the big man's hand and mumbled something about his music meaning a lot to me.

When I got home from the gig I pulled out all the Horace Blue Notes I had at that time and played a track from each before retiring for the night.

Great to know he's still enjoying his breakfast!

Strangely gratifying feeling - to read of someone you really admire's sad demise - only to find out immediately that they're still around. I might start a few more 'feelgood' threads along these lines.

Reminds me of an occasion about twenty years ago when I went to an 'After Dark'* end-of-series party where I was so taken aback to suddenly see Professor Heinz Wollf walk in - less than two weeks after I'd read his lengthy obituary in the Guardian - that I walked up to him and blurted out 'but I thought you were dead' and he had to explain to me that he'd been mistakenly and bizarrely confused with a different Professor Heinz Wollf. Unlike me he didn't seem to find it funny though.

*(After Dark = best TV programme ever - although I know there will be those that disagree....)
