  • Welsh B-music Friday in Manchester

who's coming out on friday night???

the delightful andy votel, dom thomas, dyl mei and gruff rys (super furry animals) will be playing 'welsh only' folk-funk, 60's beat and proggy jazz at 'the cornerhouse' M1. and the bars open....

andy and dom will still be pissed from the previous night.

it's free-in and there'll be many girls there.

Years ago there used to be a Welsh version of Top of The Pops called Disg a Dawn shown at Saturday lunchtimes as I recall and it used to feature all kinds of music from folk and pop to long haired rock grunters - all performing in the Welsh language. No matter what was played they all seemed to make the Mary Hopkin lookalikes in the studio strut their stuff. The idea seemed to be ... if it's in Welsh it's in the show.
There was a kind of cultural apartheid going on where these bands would be well known to Welsh speakers - mainly in mid and north Wales and totally ignored to the non Welsh speakers of the south. A generalisation I know but it's what I experienced.
I couldn't understand Welsh so I regarded all this as pale imitations of the 'real' stuff so my knowledge of Welsh language bands is zero I'm ashamed to say.
The thing is I hardly ever come across Welsh music around here apart from bloody Max Boyce and male voice choir records ...

Sorry I can't be of more help
              Back to Neuuuuuuuuuu!

Christ, you guys are busy! This some kind of B-Music tour?

I lived in Wales for a spell: enough to put years on you, but it was tidy all the same. Welsh only folk-funk eh? Blimey, records you must have an eli for every clwy that - you must've done some serious crate caibbing to get all them then. What's the onions with that night then? Them Welsh ain't all that able to fork out sometimes. And all that travelling and drinking - you must be too tired to get out of your own way... Hope it went well mind, give them the length of your musical tongues - asking for it 'e was.

A Welsh comp? Ruddy marvellous idea. I live in Europe's Youngest Capital and haven't had so much as a sniff of local beat, in spite of frantic searching. Post more details when you have 'em, Mr Eno!

And S4C on a Saturday night really does have to be seen to be believed. . .
