ive always wondered what instrument was used on the Dirty harry soundtrack to create the eerie background noises.
and then i caught the end of a Fraiser episode, with a choir and orchestra and there was a glimpse of a guy with a metal ball with tubes off it and he played for about 2 seconds and got the same sound...

anyone know what it is?

I think it's a waterphone, or at least something closely related to it. Check out a variety of different sounds you can get from it - scary high pitched noises when a bow is used on it.
