  • Jazz Question: Chico Hamilton-esque

I like jazz music, but I'm not an expert on it. Sure, I can tell my Charlie Parker's from my Roland Kirk's, but it's a big old world, jazz, and filled with pitfalls. So - the other day, I picked up a copy of the first Chico Hamilton Quintet LP from 1955. I LOVE it. The quintet features guitar, flute, bass, cello and drums and makes this very beautiful hybrid of jazz and exotica, low key and subtle as hell, full of weird little nuances. Like this, in fact.

I can't get enough of this sound. Any recommendations of similar sort of stuff gratefuly accepted!

Jimmy Giuffre had a "chamber jazz" feel.

basically nearly anything with eric dolphy as leader or player in late 50s early 60s will have a sound similar to that gorgeous chico hamilton track (sans the hint of exotica) especially when he's on flute. So that's his stuff with mal waldron, ron carter, outward bound, out there etc etc. 50s Yuseef lateef will also have a similar vibe to me

                  Try some of these
The Yusef Lateef and the Quartette Tres Bien don't have any strings but are pure jazz/exotica to my ears

Maybe he's strayed too far from jazz here, but Emil Richards Journey to Bliss could fit?

moderation is all light touch regulation round here, boss. and I see no need to intervene when the market is supplying such high quality goods for such a competitive price.

any complaints, like, you know where to find me.

and i don't know nothing anyways.

well, i didn't til i started reading this thread, for sure.
