I heard this news today. Normally I would be sad, but I really do dislike this shop a lot. The grumpy old sod behind the counter treats vinyl like shit, is effortlessly rude to most people, his stock is vastly overpriced and often in filthy, he puts "do not cross if you are a dealer" lines on the floor, the vinyl is all crushed together and not pleasant to browse through, and to top it all, apparently he was outrageously racist to a customer a couple of years ago, the customer got into his car and drove into the front of the shop. Today I tweeted that this shop was shutting and results have been extraordinary. One or two people have said they get the odd bargain in there, that the grumpy old sod is not that grumpy, but most of the replies have shown that many have had very similar vile experiences in there. A couple of highlights:
"Aggro Vinyl, my wife called it."
"I bought a record of different heart beats from there once. 'Why are you buying this shit?' was their response."
"miserable twat. Unique in the fact that it's the only record shop I walk by and never go in."
"Agree, but still a shame. Wonder who is going to take the stock? And then who is going to clean it."
"A shame, but he was indeed an arsehole."
"the only time I ever went in. He asked me to leave as it was about to rain."
"Just don't mention Peterson (http://tinyurl.com/og8rhht)
"badly named, should've been called Don't Haggle vinyl."
"Oh Johnny, I am f***ing delighted! Despite my vinyl addiction, I've boycotted that griefhole for 11yrs. Still hiss as I pass it"
So, throwing it out there. Any further thoughts about Haggle? Yes, sad than another shop is going. But I'm getting the feeling that I am not alone in thinking this shop was unusual - has there ever been a record shop to rival this in terms of customer reaction and simple abandonment? I went in twice (in 12 years) and that was enough. And it's only a mile from where I live. Are we better off without such places?
And yes, have also just noticed there is a thread about the Yellow Pages Haggle thing, and maybe I should have posted that there, never mind.
