  • Haggle Vinyl To Shut

I heard this news today. Normally I would be sad, but I really do dislike this shop a lot. The grumpy old sod behind the counter treats vinyl like shit, is effortlessly rude to most people, his stock is vastly overpriced and often in filthy, he puts "do not cross if you are a dealer" lines on the floor, the vinyl is all crushed together and not pleasant to browse through, and to top it all, apparently he was outrageously racist to a customer a couple of years ago, the customer got into his car and drove into the front of the shop. Today I tweeted that this shop was shutting and results have been extraordinary. One or two people have said they get the odd bargain in there, that the grumpy old sod is not that grumpy, but most of the replies have shown that many have had very similar vile experiences in there. A couple of highlights:

"Aggro Vinyl, my wife called it."
"I bought a record of different heart beats from there once. 'Why are you buying this shit?' was their response."
"miserable twat. Unique in the fact that it's the only record shop I walk by and never go in."
"Agree, but still a shame. Wonder who is going to take the stock? And then who is going to clean it."
"A shame, but he was indeed an arsehole."
"the only time I ever went in. He asked me to leave as it was about to rain."
    "Just don't mention Peterson (http://tinyurl.com/og8rhht)
"badly named, should've been called Don't Haggle vinyl."
"Oh Johnny, I am f***ing delighted! Despite my vinyl addiction, I've boycotted that griefhole for 11yrs. Still hiss as I pass it"

So, throwing it out there. Any further thoughts about Haggle? Yes, sad than another shop is going. But I'm getting the feeling that I am not alone in thinking this shop was unusual - has there ever been a record shop to rival this in terms of customer reaction and simple abandonment? I went in twice (in 12 years) and that was enough. And it's only a mile from where I live. Are we better off without such places?

And yes, have also just noticed there is a thread about the Yellow Pages Haggle thing, and maybe I should have posted that there, never mind.

Went in with a-then BestDressedChicken a year or two ago and had such a surreal experience it bordered on the wonderful. Dan may remember better than me, but the owner was there with a helper (or girlfriend? neighbour?), who was Chinese. They were screaming racist abuse and swearing at each other but all in kind of jest. It struck me at the time that she was kind of affectionately mimicking him.

Then we had a long conversation with the man himself about his 'whore of a mother' (his words obvs) as he gave us his life history - pretty interesting. Family from Nottingham? Northampton, his mother being local (I think) and having a relationship with an Eastern European or Turkish Jew (I think?). Lots of kind of affectionate name-calling of his mother and lots of strange sexual/racial self-abuse.

I was a bit drunk but I loved it to be honest, he was an eccentric, complicated man who, if you could take the erratic behaviour and verbal unpleasantness was just something else. I'm not sure Dan was so keen mind!

The most interesting thing was he seemed to have no relationship to records whatsoever, that was the most intriguing thing, like he's stepped through some kind of guilt-ridden portal from 1974 into owning a 2013 record shop. In fact I remember him saying he was in antiques and then just specialised??

And then, when it was time to leave, I bought a shit record for a tenner because I felt I had to.

Totally beyond any semblance of customer service, and that to be honest was the charm for me. When you have an owner like that, it's not about the shop or the records, but about him. So to (probably) paraphrase him, this all depends on how much you like big dicks. Obviously I love 'em.

I won't be missing Haggle, stopped going there a while ago. Rude little man. Hopefully he'll end up in Get Stuffed over the road, staring at all the people heading for Flashback.
The guy who runs Club Sounds in Lisbon proved himself to be a bit of a plonker when I was recently in there.
Casting his arms around to indicate his stock, he proclaimed "I don't need this shit stuff....I'm a DJ, this stuff is shit".
Well, I don't know whether he was a dj or not, but he was right about his stock. If he was such a big shot "DJ", why did he need to be selling chud all week?

I've been in about half a dozen times and he was always fine with me but I think it's completely random whether he decides to give you a hard time or not?!

I agree that it's a total dump though and weeding through the filthy junk got pretty soul destroying.

Did get a nice UK Stooges debut album for £40-50ish once.

I think Mang has picked up a fair few gems out of the teetering mountains of crud 45s.

How a dump like Haggle outlasted good record shops like Stand Out/Minus Zero and Intoxica is more to do with London gentrification than anything else I guess…...

He's an old prick. He made some racist comment to a mate of mine about five years ago and was lucky he didn't wind up in hospital and his shop firebombed.
He was quite rightly confronted about it there and then and chose to shat his trousers, retreating to the back of the shop out of sight.

          Nice bloke. Not.

Haggle and Flashback are chalk and cheese. I won't miss it.

The last time I went there, he engaged me in conversation then threatened to chuck me out if I said "no worries" for a third time. Fair enough. Shortly after a guy walked in, asked the owner an innocent enough question, which eventually resulted in this guy also saying "no worries" and the owner stormed out from behind the counter and physically threw this guy out of the shop. Usually, I'm sure I'd find this kind of thing amusing but in the context of Haggle, surrounded by grimy polythene and PVC sleeves full of chud that I'd seen the last time I'd been there, 2 or 3 years before, I just found the whole scenario thoroughly depressing.

Picked up some good things there though. Best of which was probably an OG copy of Twogether - A Couple Of Times which I sadly had to sell last year to help pay off a night of shameful debauchery.

I haven't met this odious man-dealing with him over the phone was depressing enough! He is unspeakably rude and obnoxious-I asked a question about a website item "Can I..." "QUIET he shouted-LET ME SPEAK" - which immediately made me think, he (seriously) has mental health issues. He then curtly said "CATALOGUE ITEM NUMBER?" I hurried through this transaction as quickly as I could-as could not bear the confrontational/bombastic dialogue! Closing? Hallelujah!

My two-penneth...I attempted to sell him some records, which he did look at but begrudgingly. When I entered the shop, he and the chinese girl who he had with him as an assistant, were doing a strange dance to 'Sex machine' by James Brown, as he attempted to teach her the words.

'So what are these then?' 'Oh I really can't be bothered' 'I don't care' etc were some his utterances. He then made a derogatory and provocative comment to my girlfriend and I nearly lost my rag. I had heard that he was actually the owner of the building and therefore didn't need to pay the rent, which could help explain the manner in which he conducted his business

I wonder if he's having a half price sale?

Good on him. I wish more shops adopted this policy. One 'no worries' is bad enough, but three...you both deserved all you got.

Echoing what others have said, the owner is a bit of a knob - as most self-styled eccentrics who wear stupid hats are. But he was entertaining. How many shops can you go in nowadays and be entertained? I have him pegged as a kind of Vivian Stanshall kind of character - he's all about getting a reaction. I'd much rather be insulted in a shop than get the usual blank faced have a nice day. When I've conversed with him one on one though he's been quite civil/pleasant...
But then I never heard anything racist from him...that changes things dramatically

Wonder what the point would be of having a half-price sale, if the records are ready to walk out on their own two feet?...

As for 'Lynn' as (he) calls himself-is he of a central European descent??
