  • Post your favourite "surprise" find of 2014

It's that list time of year. Play along if you fancy.
What came out of the blue, and struck a chord with you this year? Not stuff you may have been hunting down and finally bagged, but something you previously knew nothing about, but landed upon - old, new, recommendation, chazza find, youtube sidebar link....whatever.
I'll throw my hat into the ring with this one, Beast, S/T. Mr Sayers handed me this lp at Utrecht, and casually asked if I'd heard it, and noted I might like it.
To say it blew me away is an understatement.
First 2 tracks give you an idea.

Don't be shy chaps, get some tunes up, it may happen all over again
Everyone tear down your own little wall
That keeps you from being a part of it all
Because you've got to be one with the one and all
You've just got to be close to it all

Pleased your liking it Paul mate, I've got Nige to thank for putting me onto it...I should really dig it out for some long overdue needle time, as you've just reminded me how great it is!

Great thread by the way, I'll have a think and see if i can add on....

Do we have to guess once we've had a listen?

Yes! It's from a musical / stage show and I was like "huh! how did this end up here?!!"
A cross between Brit Jazz and Ravel, really good

And also this Tony Weston private press that I mentioned in the finds thread:

I'm liking this a bit too much

                      Great thread.

I've greatly enjoyed this Jake Thackray LP that I found in Oxfam. I find it incredibly charming and evocative of the 70s to me. A world gone by. I can imagine how famous he was back in the day, and my Mum listening to him on the radio. It didn't "blow me away" as such but it makes me nostalgic for things half-remembered.

On a completely different tip, I picked up a Mark Stewart LP when I was out buying a load of other stuff (for a Waxi swap). I love this dubbed out version of "Forbidden Colours" which I'd never heard before:

"As technology has advanced, vinyl records are outdated as they are music from the 19th Century so only hipsters and elderly people buy vinyl records".

As ever, impressed by the diversity of musical styles people bring to the table. Jake Thackray takes me back too. Lovely stuff.
