  • what the ruddy hell is this music ??

Obviously I know this is the wonderfully strident theme to the Harry Enfield Television Show circa 1990s, but what is it? Who wrote it?

    someone must know.....

If I was a betting man, I'd wager that Lord Thames will know the answer to this...

Argh, nearly - it's an Italian operatic piece arranged for brass by Kate St John, and I can't remember what it flippin' is!

Nice one Lord Thames, impressive enough knowing that. Never knew the girl out of the Dream Academy was the arranger. I thought it might be Rossini, because of that thrusting bold martial quality. The answers are there if we only keep searching.

The theme is Or co'dadi (Soldiers' chorus) from Il Trovatore by Giuseppe Verdi, as featured in Enfield's Desert Island Discs selection.

Many thanks Agnes. I'll have to check out this Verdi bloke and find out if he did any other TV theme work.

Indeed - he's done some great library work under that alias.
